Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Anderson.
Kevin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for adventure and am extremely fortunate to have lived in and traveled to some of the world’s most amazing and beautiful places. I always carry a camera with me on adventures – usually multiple cameras – and for many years shared my work with only family and friends. I’m not professionally trained, and learned through many years of practice, practice, and more practice.
I found the best way to learn is to grab a camera and start shooting, adjust the settings of your camera, and shoot some more. Get creative, try new angles and composure until you find a style that is unique to the brand you want to create. Cameras will continue to improve, and photographers will continue to evolve, but the one thing that will stay constant is your unique style of photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would describe my journey into professional photography as a washboard dirt road – some bumpy and winding roads, some smooth and straight roads, but never gentle enough for cruise control. Social media and dedicated e-commerce websites have made it easier than ever to advertise your unique style of visual storytelling – but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to differentiate yourself from the competition. Photographers wear many different hats – photographer, editor, marketer, social media content creator, web developer, the list goes on and on – long hours and dedication are required to be successful.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’d characterize myself as an Adventure Photographer. I usually have a style I want to capture when I set out on an adventure, ask the client want they hope to achieve, as well as what setting the pieces will be displayed in. Some clients are specific, some are open, but all have the same goal: something beautiful and unique. Even with a well thought out plan and defined goal, there’s always time to stop and smell (and photograph) the flowers along the way. My preferred subjects to shoot are places that a lot of people never get to see or even knew existed. Slot canyons in Southeastern Utah are a favorite, climbing areas with unique geographic features rank near the top, as well as remote waterfalls and high alpine flowers.
Any predictions for the industry over the next few years?
Cameras will continue to evolve and photographers will continue to capture amazing moments in time for all to enjoy.
