Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Gentilcore.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and that’s really all I ever wanted to do. I fell in love with comics at a young age and I’d stay up late, secretly watching super gross horror movies. I ended up going to The Art Institute of Colorado for animation because it was the closest thing I could figure out to do that would allow me to draw all day as a career.
I wasn’t too fond of the repetition and monotony of animation or the complexity of 3D animation and fell back on traditional illustration and comic books as a way to get my own ideas out to the world. By day I’ve been working as a graphic designer but my passion lies with my own creations, however they manifest, which has mostly been horror and sci-fi comics.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth. The struggles are constantly trying to get people to see your work, or even buy it, and constantly having to be promoting and selling your work. Not to mention the time commitment which is hard to do between a day job and the normal things life has for you. It’s a bumpy road to be sure.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
Creephouse Comics is myself and my partner, William Tooker. We make horror and sci-fi genre comics that are a combination of all the stuff we find horrifying and funny. We’re completely independent, create our own stories and characters, and have been doing so for over ten years now.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Success is objective but with making creative projects, determination is key.
