Meet Kevin Hoth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Hoth.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Though I was born an artist – I was always drawing and painting as a kid – I did not take a photography class until my last semester of college. I was studying to be an Occupational Therapist because I loved human physiology and anatomy and it seemed like a safe career choice. I actually dissected a human cadaver in a five-credit anatomy lab even after I’d dropped out of the OT program. I volunteered at a hospital after coming back from studying in Spain my junior year abroad and it was then that I decided to finish with my Art major, much to my parents’ chagrin. Though I had taken one darkroom course my last semester of college, I really fell in love with photography in my mid-twenties on a nine-month solo road trip throughout the southwestern United States. After some moving around the west – New Mexico, Utah, etc. I went on to get my Masters in Fine Art Photography at The University of Washington in Seattle. I had a great position as a research assistant where I was tasked with learning multimedia software (for graphic and web design, video editing, digital imaging, etc.) so that I could teach faculty how to use it. I fell in love with video in grad school and mostly made video work for about ten years. I collaborated with dance companies and live musicians as a VJ. I had no formal training in design but I was hired as the main graphic designer for the print-on-demand wing of Amazon.com due to all the design work I had done for friend’s bands and for my art shows. I also did some cinematography on a documentary about tiny house living that was on Netflix and premiered at South By Southwest. So, I’ve done a lot of random creative occupations.

Though I began doing photography more than other art forms over twenty years ago, I dedicated myself fully to photography as my art practice about ten years ago while living in the South. I have mostly done fine art photography and video, but I’ve also done commercial fashion and advertising work over the years. I’ve been a university instructor for the last ten years, but am now focusing more on my fine art and commercial photography career. My artwork is represented by Walker Fine Art in Denver.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has never been clear, but then again I’ve never been one to compromise nor to choose the easy path. I also get bored quickly doing the same thing, so I try to always innovate and experiment in my creative endeavors. The goal is to make work that has never been seen before. I am confident in my practice but also embrace failure and seeming dead ends because I have the experience to know that great work can come from nutty ideas. I’ve also been through some fairly traumatic life experiences, and these things have additionally solidified my creative practice as a truly healing endeavor.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m probably most known for my fine art landscape work, but I’ve also loved opportunities to do innovative product photography, shoot well-designed interiors, or do oddball portraits. Most recently, I’ve really been enjoying photographing hip hop dance, modern architecture, and jewelry. I’ve been getting back into doing more video work.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wish I would’ve stuck with some things longer. I probably could have been a successful music video director a long time ago.
