Meet Darcy Kiefel of Kiefel Photography in Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darcy Kiefel.

Darcy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been a photographer for over 25 years. I began my career in the international world of cycling as staff photographer for Cyclisme International Magazine in Brussels, Belgium. I was the first woman to cover cycling in Europe. For over ten years rode (with a driver) on the back of a motorcycle photographing the European men’s cycling nine months each year. This included the infamous Tour de France.

My life path changed when I was requested to document in Serbia during the war. There are no words to express the effect this journey had on me when witnessing the suffering of others. I left Europe and returned to the USA, determined to dedicate my life to humanitarian efforts. I have worked for over 15 years as a humanitarian photojournalist documenting development and relief efforts with organizations worldwide.

In 2004, partnered with Heifer International, I was honored with a photographic exhibition at the United Nations in NY. Today, as of 2019, I have traveled to over 85 countries on behalf of humanitarian organizations supporting the developing world and their efforts to eradicate world hunger and poverty. “Spiritually and mentally, my work is driven by profound compassion for mankind, particularly women and children. My photography’s inspired by the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people and their unbroken vision of hope.

When in the US, I specialize in Life Celebrations and photograph weddings, senior and family portraits. “I believe the power of an image has the ability to speak to us through a universal language. Regardless of culture or origin, it transcends words and needs no interpretation. Photography allows me to serve as an artist, capturing the spirit and essence of emotion through the lens of my camera.”

65% of my work now is capturing lifetime memories. I enjoy combining this with my humanitarian  assignments. One assignment captures the spirit and strength of our  neighboring countries. The other often the beauty, happiness and good fortune given to us on American soil.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have been extremely fortunate — both in my life and my career. Yes, of course, there have been struggles along the way, but with a positive outlook on life, anything is possible. I think the most challenging aspect of my career is knowing I cannot help all the extraordinary individuals who have shared their stories and I have had the honor to photograph — capturing their tenacious spirit, strength, and power while overcoming tragedies. Those in the developing world struggle each and every day just to put food on the table. They are the true heroes of this world.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Kiefel Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am proud to capture treasured moments in time while developing true relationships with the people in front of the camera. Both in the US and abroad.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It’s a bit intimidating with mobile devices and social media. Only time will tell! I tend not to follow trends. Trends disappear over time, but a powerful, natural image will remain for years and go down in history.
