Today we’d like to introduce you to Korey Shumway.
Korey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started taking pictures with my phone. At first, I didn’t put much thought into it. I saw something I liked and just snapped a photo. Eventually, I started looking for unique subjects and compositions. I tried to take normal or unimpressive things and make them interesting through the eyes of the camera. Once I moved to Colorado, I fell in love with the beautiful scenery and rugged landscape of the Rocky Mountains. I wanted to be able to share this with others, so I decided to invest in my first DSLR and it snowballed from there. My enjoyable hobby turned into a healthy obsession, and then became one of my greatest passions. I cross several genres in photography. From landscapes to urban, and portraits to real estate. No matter what the subject matter is, I find great joy in being creative and trying to capture it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are smooth parts of the road as well as rough parts. Overall, it has been one of the most positive things in my life. When I go out hiking or walk around the city with my camera out, I feel at peace. With that said, there are always struggles no matter what it is you do. It was tough to get to the point where I felt comfortable with my photography and confident enough to take on paid gigs. It took some time to fine tune my style and settle on my particular look and feel. Another struggle of mine was trying to fit into our modern world. There are pros and cons to how much weight social media can hold. Although it’s a great way to gain exposure and showcase your work, it can also take away from you as an artist or creative type. It’s easy to change your style or only shoot certain things to get more likes and followers. I struggled with this for a while…trying some different things for the sake of fitting into a more popular niche. I’ve since grown and now post what I love and enjoy without worrying if it’s what most people want to see. On a more positive note, apps like Instagram, Day flash and Facebook are great for other reasons. I get a lot of inspiration which motivates me to keep shooting and better myself. There are so many incredibly talented people out there and these apps give us a forum to connect across the globe.
Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
My company’s name is KSP. Although I shoot many different things, I mainly specialize in portrait photography. I’ve done weddings, headshots, lifestyle, children/family, graduation and engagement to name a few. I have grown to love working with other people and trying to capture their personality in photos. I work hard to try and make my clients feel comfortable and not worry about the camera. Simple conversation and getting each other to laugh is a big part of capturing a good portrait. Those candid moments and natural smiles really bring out the personality of the person in front of the camera. I also like to incorporate other styles of photography into my portrait work. Whether it be night, landscape or urban, I can use those fundamentals to make a better portrait that could potentially stand out when compared to others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I don’t think I have one particular memory that stands out on its own. However, Christmas was always my favorite time growing up. It was always one of the best times of the year. There would be snow on the ground, we got together with family, enjoyed holiday food and watched lots of movies together. Even though it isn’t quite as magical as an adult, I always get nostalgic around this time.
