Today we’d like to introduce you to Kris Sutton.
Kris, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began as a professional speaker in 2001 as part of a comedy duo called “The O’Shea Report” with my former comedy partner and ex-husband. While we were skilled at comedy, we were clueless around the business. It took us several years to get clear about how to position ourselves, our brand, our website, and promotion.
After working with many coaches and research on our own, we were finally what some would consider “successful.” We were being booked by speakers bureaus, had a solid marketing plan, and won some awards, including being voted “Top 5 Entertainment Keynote Speakers” four consecutive years. Unfortunately, our partnership ended and I had to reinvent myself. I had no house, no business, no partner, and was even kept from my dog. It was a really tough time. Thankfully, I had earned a Masters Degree in Marketing from the University of Denver a few years prior. Armed with my experience growing a speaking business and what I learned in school, I started a marketing coaching business for speakers, consultants, and small businesses.
The coaching business quickly morphed into a marketing agency, as I found that so many clients just wanted their marketing done for them. I stumbled upon StoryBrand, a framework to help clarify your marketing message, and decided to become a Certified StoryBrand Guide. That was one of the best decisions I ever made. I suddenly had a simple, quick, and compelling way to help clients create a clear, strong brand message.
Through my StoryBrand Guide community, I’ve been able to partner with Guides who offer complementary services so that my clients can have everything they need in one place. It’s nice for them not to have to juggle varying contractors and instead have an integrated brand message, logo, website, and promotion. I’ve discovered that I have a passion for branding, copywriting, and web design. It’s so gratifying to see how my clients are feeling more confident in their marketing and proud of their websites. When I hear that my clients are booking more work because of our work together, I’m grateful to be on this path.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I had to learn by trial and error on how to build and market a business. As a humor speaker, my first paid booking was four days before 9/11. That threw me because I was upset about world events and businesses pulled back during that time period. It took a long time to build that business, so I got a “day job” as a corporate trainer for a business that tripled in size in three years. That taught me a lot about what my corporate comedy clients were dealing with. From that experience, I developed a comedy program about change that was very much needed by companies. Thankfully, I can draw on the experience of struggling to help my clients not have to face the same issues.
The other major bump in the road was splitting with my life and comedy partner. I’ll be honest. I was knocked on my bum for a while. It was emotionally pretty tough. Because of that, I struggled to find the energy and motivation to build a new business. Over time, I was able to find my mojo again and start anew. It took introspection, support, friends, and family to get me through the rough patches.

Most people don’t go into business because they love marketing. Instead, they end up feeling frustrated, lost and in need of someone to guide them through the maze of marketing. That’s where we come in. We follow a methodical approach that makes branding, websites, and promotion effective and fun. We’ve been there, done that, and bought the t-shirt. As a team who uses StoryBrand to create effective marketing, we create client-centered messaging that inspires prospects to take action.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I was always in the school talent show. One year my mom wrote a song about our school for me to sing. It became the school song! I enjoyed putting smiles on peoples’ faces. When I was asked to sing the song at a PTA meeting, I accidentally flipped the lyrics and sang the last verse as the first verse. Fortunately, I was able to think on my feet as an eight-year-old and just reversed the lyrics and kept going. Nobody knew that I had messed up and I realized that I was a talented performer.
