Today we’d like to introduce you to Krisi Olivero.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Krisi. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always believed in magic. It just took me some time to learn how to harness my own.
As a child, I loved anything fantasy- fairies, dragons, magic spells, perfect sunsets, colorful blooms, shadows on the water— you name it, I was into it. I even once got in trouble for drawing all of the Harry Potter characters on my bedroom wall in the middle of the night. Luckily my Mom caved, thought it was awesome, and helped me paint it.
I fell into film because movie magic was the closest I felt I could get to the real thing. Movies are truly magical, they help us escape, and that transportation is magic at it’s finest. I love getting lost in a good film. I love being able to communicate an indescribable emotion with a scene set just right. I especially love the power of visual fx to help us express feelings that are too hard to explain in words. But, while I treasure film as a beautiful medium, getting bogged down in the capitalism, chaos, and dark magic of the advertising world was really dragging me down. I started to lose my sparkle. I started to get too many projects where I was asked to factory farm bullshit with no respect for the power of creativity or the complexity of human emotions. My passion started becoming a job, and I was not into it.
In an effort to run from the world of advertising, and find any semblance of solace, I turned to a different story- I turned back to the story of our planet. And there it was— all of that magic I had been missing. It what is in the gentle breeze on a hot day. It was in the bumble of a passing hummingbird. It was in the way everyone drops what they are doing and stares at a rainbow for a just a moment before it fades. It was in my hands, and it was SO accessible, I had just been too caught up in the bullshit to see it.
And so, my views have changed. I’ve decided that my producing skills might be best invested to help produce the planet. A great producer provides tools, time and encouragement to the best humans they know in an effort to make the magic happen. All of those are things I can absolutely provide for the planet. Since switching gears I’ve started advocating for low waste living. I’ve started gardening. I’ve started using my creativity to upcycle in ways I’d never considered before. I’ve started to teach others. I’m currently working on a longer-term goal to create a sustainable community center here in Denver- A place for the planet. A place to practice. A place for the community to reconnect with magic.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No journey worth taking is a smooth road. I’ve had many struggles working in the advertising world, from a lack of commitment to creative that does good for the world, to overt sexism and abuse. I’ve been told my creativity is only valuable in terms of creative budgeting. I’ve been told to shut up and hit the right keys without opinion. I’ve been told that my ambitions aren’t appropriate and I should mind my place at the bottom. I’ve been told plenty of things to knock me down, but that hasn’t stopped me from getting back up.
Roald Dahl said “Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it”. Every time someone has knocked me down, I’ve done my best to remind myself that it’s really the other person that is struggling because they are failing to see the magic of creative collaboration.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a Freelance Producer, I work across a wide range of fields. I began my career in post-production and I have very strong skills there. I also supervise production and recently got my master’s in writing for serialized storytelling to further my skills in development. From page to post, if you want to tell stories that matter, I can help you make it happen.
My planetary endeavors are in the seedling stages and I’d love to talk to anyone interested in hearing more. I currently run an Instagram account – @generation_alter_eco which focuses on low waste living tips, and I just returned from Taos, New Mexico where I spent a month learning eco-friendly construction from Earthship Biotecture. The dream is to open a sustainable community center near Denver within the next three years. At the community center, we hope to host classes in all veins of sustainable living to promote the health of both people and the planet.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in big family that never questioned my creativity. Quite to the contrary, creative thinking was always celebrated in my house and I feel exceptionally lucky to be able to say that. In middle and high school, I was deeply involved with dance and theater and there I learned the power of magic and collaboration.
I’ve always been passionate about the sparkle of the world, and I’ve always found simple pleasures to be the greatest gifts.
