Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Sandine LPC, RPT.
Kristen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I graduated from Regis University in 2016 with my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and specializes in Counseling Children and Adolescents. Soon after, I met with and gained knowledge and expertise from therapists in private practice that helped me understand how to set up a business, deal with legal and ethical issues, marketing tips, etc. I truly believe in the theories that I implement in therapy and having my own practice allowed me to provide the best therapy I could to the clients I felt I could help the most! Today, I have my own private Play Therapy Room where I can help parents, children, and families coping with everything from mood disorders and family adjustments to grief and trauma.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road – and I would be very skeptical of anyone starting a business saying it has been! There have been struggles including choosing whether or not to collaborate with other therapists, share space or have my own, and navigate insurance and the mental health system, in general! There have been difficult decisions, but I’m grateful I have been able to seek supervision and advice from other therapists and business owners along the way.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Registered Play Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor – I provide therapy to children, pre-teens, and families. I specialize in counseling children and adolescents and Grief Therapy. I provide the therapeutic environment and trusting relationship for families to express themselves, stay true to their values, and connect and communicate with each other in effective and meaningful ways. I also provide parent coaching so that parents can help children with difficult feelings and helpful coping skills at home and I consult with teachers and other professionals involved with the family so that their care is consistent and collaborative. I am most proud that I am able to understand each child and parent in the context of how their family functions, that I see each child as a unique individual, and that I can help children and families by emphasizing and encouraging their strengths. I have many years of experience in childcare and early childhood education and I connect with children quickly and on their level, through play, art, and education.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
It can be hard to determine if certain professionals or locations are going to align with your business and values and if they will uphold the integrity you expect for your business, all the while knowing that in order to help the most people, you need to keep moving and get your name out there. However, I believe we learn from our mistakes and all of the experiences I have had while building my business have been beneficial to me as both an individual and a business owner.
