Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Weiger.
Kyle, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started my entrepreneurial journey in 2012 when we (my partner and I) built our very first online fitness site together. It was a yoga site that was created literally in my tiny one-bedroom apartment, where I had converted my living room to a filming studio on a shoestring budget. While we didn’t hit the homerun with our first venture, we learned a ton about selling courses and memberships in the online fitness space!
Fast forward the tape a few years, and I had begun taking on Handstand Training and Coaching as my full-time profession. I had been booked on numerous international teaching gigs, and had gotten a handful of students asking for online videos, so using our background in web development, and my passion for Handstands, we had built a six week course on my personal site – kyleweiger.com – where it started to gain traction at the very beginning of 2018, and eventually spun up into its own multi-6-figure business. Not bad for a guy teaching a handstand course filmed on an iPhone 7. 🙂
Along with my course starting to pick up momentum, my partner and I had noticed an influx of requests from people saying “Hey, who built this site? Can they build one like this for me?”… And although we didn’t have the bandwidth to build this many custom sites, it did spark us to think about building something that can be replicated quickly and easily for any entrepreneur out there that wants to offer paid content in their area of expertise.
Thus, after careful consideration and planning. We launched the MemberDev Platform. It caters to anyone who teaches any kind of skill, craft, technique, or process, and allows them to focus on creating content while we tackle the technical stuff. Long story short, we went from two guys in an apartment making a yoga site in 2012, to a full-on membership platform that gets other entrepreneurs online quickly and efficiently in 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In 2016, I was offered a job that took me to California. As hard as it was to leave Denver, I decided to take a chance and join this up-and-coming start-up company… and let’s be honest, the opportunity to move to the beach wasn’t too bad either. About a month after landing there and giving up nine years in Denver, the company let me know that they had made a pretty big miscalculation and that they were not, in fact, going to open a California office… I was devastated. I had signed a rather expensive lease, and California is just a more costly place to live in general.
Thus, I decided to go back to my yoga roots and try to make it as a full-time yoga teacher in California. Now, while that dream is nice, the economics of the situation are hard to justify mathematically. Making $60/class combined with the general cost of living in Orange County is not an ideal financial scenario. About a month before I launched my Handstand Course, my money had run out and was at a loss for how I was going to pay my rent and car bill the following month.
MemberDev – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
At MemberDev, we have a platform gives you all the tools and support needed to launch and grow your online membership business. We’re a small, boutique software company with years of experience in creating membership sites. Creating a membership website requires a lot of moving parts. The process can be confusing, challenging and extremely time-consuming… Instead – we make it easy, clear and efficient. We give our clients a membership platform built specifically for their businesses. Being ran a couple of serial entrepreneurs, we have a leg-up on the big corporately-funded solutions, in that we actually talk face-to-face with our clients and we get to know them, their business models, and we offer coaching on how to optimize.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One of my proudest moments at MemberDev came very, very recently. We were able to build and deploy three membership sites for three local Denver businesses and all three of the business owners happened to be very close long-time friends of mine in the Health & Wellness industry. When Covid hit, and their gyms/studios were forced to close their doors, it was catastrophic to their businesses, which they had worked so hard to build over the years. All three had approached me to brainstorm because they knew I had some experience in taking traditional businesses online, and I’m proud to say that we were able to get all three of them up and running on the MemberDev Platform, and all have consistent paying monthly members. We don’t know how long Covid is going to last, but no matter what, when it’s over all 3 of these Denver businesses now have an online arm that generates recurring revenue for them each and every month. The fact that I had the opportunity to help a few friends in need is something that really makes me love what I do.
