Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Terribile.
Kym, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started making candles a few years ago when I discovered that the candles that I was burning were full of terrible chemicals. I spent a lot of time watching YouTube videos and googling candle making techniques. Candle making became an incredibly therapeutic hobby and a beautiful creative outlet. I loved blending fragrances, selecting different vessels, and I especially loved naming my scents. After a few months of playing around in my kitchen and gifting countless candles to friends, I had the idea to turn candle making into a business.
I always knew that at some point in my life that I would be an entrepreneur. I have never been one for a conventional nine to five job, and the freedom to make my own hours, and have complete creative control to develop my vision really called to me.
In starting this business, it was incredibly important to me to create a product that embodied everything that I believed in—the purest ingredients and the most eco-friendly sourcing available. It took me two years of experimenting with different waxes and fragrances, and test burning my candles to get a product that I was happy with and that I felt confident enough to sell. This past December I launched Wax Crescent just in time for the holidays, and it has been an amazing experience.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely struggles along the way. What I struggled with the most in starting Wax Crescent was letting go of my fear. I was afraid that I wasn’t capable of running a business, that people wouldn’t buy my product and that I would fail.
There were so many times over the course of the last two years that I tried to get my business going, but then I would allow self-doubt to creep in, and I would quit. Sometimes my fear was so overwhelming that I wouldn’t pour a candle for months at a time.
This past fall, after not making a single candle for about six months, a friend connected me with a local woman who had recently gone through the process of starting her own business. Connecting with her and seeing someone “doing it” gave me the courage to push through my fear, and finally launch Wax Crescent.
Please tell us about Wax Crescent.
Wax Crescent is a candle company based in Boulder, Colorado, that makes soy wax candles. The purpose of these candles is to help to create a meditative space for grounding and awareness. I have always felt a strong connection to The Universe, and the subtle energies that live in all things. I believe that gemstones and crystals have the potential to carry energy, and can act as talismans to support us through difficult times—keeping us present and focused. Each Wax Crescent candle is topped with a gemstone. These stones can assist in cultivating an intentional space and an experience that allows for us to connect to our purest desires.
When developing my product, I tried to be incredibly conscious of sourcing. All Wax Crescent candles are made with wax from USA grown soybeans. The candles are scented with phthalate-free fragrance oils and infused with high-end essential oils. I think what sets Wax Crescent candles apart from other candles is that they are not only beautiful to look at with their gemstones and crushed flowers, but they are whimsical, and lighting one is an intentional act of self-care.
I think that what I am most proud of as a company is that I am authentically representing myself and my values. I am not afraid to be vulnerable and honest when talking about my product, my experiences or my beliefs. I understand that my candles are not for everyone, and I am ok with that.
What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is catching fireflies. I remember spending summer evenings waiting for it to get dark, and running barefoot around my yard; the cool wet earth under my feet–trying to cup the glowing bugs between my palms. I have always been drawn to whimsical and magical things, and what is more magical than a firefly?
