Today we’d like to introduce you to Layne Steege.
Layne, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2015, I was a frustrated business owner struggling to find a web designer that could bring my vision to life. I finally started looking for answers on my own and began learning different skills while exploring various design platforms. I became obsessed, and before I knew it was designing websites for family and friends for free. After a while, I was finally able to start charging for my work.
I think what I love most about web design is the combination of fluid creativity and structure. Designers I admire build beautiful pieces of art with clean functionality. That is always what I am working towards in every project. Today, I use my experience to help others find solutions to their business growing pains. I’ve always felt my biggest strength as a business owner is knowing how it feels to be my clients.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Let’s just say I’m learning a lot. Design has always intrigued me and sparked my creativity. In that way, I have been able to find ease. But my journey continues to have its challenges. The biggest one being the vulnerability of what it’s like to start something new on your own. This past year has been an experiment of learning how to get out of my own way.
Self-awareness has been key in working through my fears. There are always going to be reasons not to do something. My strategy is to take action before I can start to doubt my decisions.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Design by Layne styles brands, designs websites, creates graphics, and constructs marketing materials for small businesses. My business is a one-woman show. I am the owner, operator, marketing director, customer service rep, secretary, and coffee run goer for my business.
Of all of these things, I think what I am most proud of is the experience I create for my clients. I only work with one client at a time and make it clear they are my priority. Their work matters to them, and so it matters to me. I never take that lightly and see every project as an honor.
What were you like growing up?
I was always a really hard-working kid. Growing up as a competitive figure skater taught me important lessons that I think translate well to working on your own business. I also loved art in its many forms. Dance, drawing, and especially music.
People often tell me how serious I was as a kid… I guess not everything stays the same!
