Today we’d like to introduce you to Lev Averbakh.
Lev, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been working in the music industry for quite some time. I’ve worked as a driver, stage builder, and even helped design some stages, but being a Tour Manager is what I really enjoyed. I did that for several years and after my last big tour as a TM, things just didn’t feel right. I didn’t feel like I was where I needed to be, so it was time for a change. I decided to start my own music project and Since JulEYE was born. I already knew how to DJ pretty well and have learned a good bit about music from the acts that I worked for, so I hit the ground running.
I used some of my music industry contacts to book the first few shows and after those went well, I was hooked. I knew that making music and performing live was definitely my path and with the help of my many very talented and incredibly supportive friends, it was becoming a reality. Fast forward to now (almost three years later) and I’ve played close to 100 shows, played some of my favorite music festivals, did my first national tour and signed with Mammoth Music Group, who manages some of the top names in electronic music. I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been too bad for me. Many new musics acts struggle to get things going, but since I already put so much work into other ends of the music industry and made some very good friends and valuable contacts, it wasn’t as difficult for me as most people who are just starting out. When I worked as a Tour Manager/Driver, there were many struggles for sure, but that’s part of the job.
Since JulEYE Music – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is producing music and performing live. I specialize in making music that is my own and curating/performing captivating DJ sets. I think the biggest thing that sets Since JulEYE apart is our live performance when we do the three-piece Since JulEYE Live Band. The band features myself on bass, Todd Stoops on keys, and Brisco Jones on turntables. Whether it’s in the studio or on stage, I definitely feel something special working with these guys.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now the future of the music industry is incredibly uncertain. I just want to get back to playing shows and festivals. I had some very good momentum going after I played my biggest show to date at Mission Ballroom on Feb 8, so I’m looking to pick up where I left off. In the meantime, I’m working on new music, getting ready to release some finished music and planning to do some live streams.
