Today we’d like to introduce you to Liat Arochas.
Liat’s voice has a haunting quality that is somehow comforting and a musical style that has been described as “folk-edge.” Liat’s unforgettable songs range in attitude. She works with a variety of musicians in a spirit of mutual collaboration in which her style melds with others’.
Liat received some formal music training as a child in voice, piano, and guitar. She then wrote her first song at age fourteen, shortly after her father taught her some chords on the guitar. During high school, she formed a band, which played all over Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City. It was at this time she developed her songwriting process. “It depends on the situation, but I usually improvise where music and lyrics are concurrent. I start with a chord progression, turn the recorder on, and start singing words.”
While studying speech pathology at Temple University, she took vocal therapy, where she was introduced to many different vocal techniques, including different ways of massaging the vocal cords and new breathing techniques to help support the diaphragm. By helping her understand the anatomy of the voice box, this science background gave her the knowledge to use her voice in the healthiest way. She then was certified as a Registered Behavior Technician and uses music in all sessions. With her music, speech, and behavioral sciences background, Liat is beginning to meld them all together to form something extremely novel.
Over the past five years, Liat’s musical vocation has become twofold: she performs her own compositions in concerts and in therapeutic contexts. She is a music specialist at Swallow Hill Music, doing outreach programs to schools that need music but cannot afford it. Singing with children under the age of five years old. “There is no judgement with this beautiful audience. They are down for anything!” Children love to dance, clap and stomp to Liat’s original songs, which also accompany books.
Liat just composed the music for a brand new documentary called “OPEN” about WordPress world and how it works. She works with this brilliant company called Lightworkers Republic. By playing live music during yoga classes, Liat provides a calming centering milieu for the yogis as well as for herself. Many consider Liat to be a sound healer, restoring spirits from infants to elderly.
Liat has performed in venues across the globe from Colorado to New York to Israel. Her performances also include many festivals such as ARISE, Evergreen Music Festival, Uke Festival, and Sister Winds in Colorado; Beardfest, Cape May Music Festival, and NJ Folk Festival in New Jersey. She was featured on NBC-10 Morning News for Best Artist of South Jersey.
Liat aims to reconnect the mind, body, and spirit through music. Be it live, via download, on CD, or radio and television, you won’t want to miss this emerging artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
Challenges have made me stronger on every level. In my teen years, I always felt the need to escape. Instead of actually doing it, I wrote about it. Writing to me was my ultimate therapy. It was my way to escape. In my college years, there was much heartbreak with many different relationships and overall stress but I always came back to writing with my guitar sitting on the floor and singing for hours, my roommates loved it. It’s my coping mechanism and I am so grateful to have that as my passion instead of a type of substance.
The past two years, I was in a band called DARK ARTS we were just beginning to have some friction in the Denver music scene. One of the bandmates suffered from severe depression and became suicidal. It got so bad the band had to break up. The remaining members still meet up on occasion but it will never be the same. The good part is that there is still so much growth between the remaining members and I do believe that we are going to create something even better come the following months. All in all, writing has made me who I am today and got me through the hardest times.
Tell us more about your work.
I am a singer/songwriter, voice teacher, guitar teacher, ukulele teach, and sound healer. I specialize in inspiring youth and calming the elderly. I am known to heal through music. I am most proud of making a difference in so many lives young and old. I hustle, in many different areas of music. From sound healings to music classes, from performing in front of all different audiences to writing songs for children’s books, tv, film, and commercials. From therapy sessions to practicing the art of writing with other talents throughout the Denver area. I have so many backgrounds to call my own. It’s only the beginning.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see myself growing as an all-around music, speech, behavioral therapist. Putting all three avenues together may be the best thing for all therapists around the world. Combining the way to communicate thru song and using the mind to push further and further. I want to heal the masses, go inward with them and truly find the beauty in all. There’s a true healing in that and I strive to find it.
