Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Hendrix.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As far as I can remember back to my childhood, my mother has always been re-arranging furniture and painting something around the house. Back then, it was more of a nuisance than anything – coming home and never knowing where the sofa would be that day. Now that I look back on her creativity for interiors, I know exactly where my passion for interior design stemmed from – but like most people, I took a winding path to get to the place I am now.
I have a degree in Advertising from the Journalism school at CU Boulder and also a degree in Interior Design from the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver. I’m proud to say that I actually use both of them every day in my career!
When I graduated from the Art Institute, I worked for about six months with a firm who focused on model home staging. I have never shopped so hard in my life! It was an eye opening experience learning how much really goes into the planning and execution of making a model home look like it had been perfectly “lived in.”About six months later, I was recruited by a large healthcare design firm, Gallun Snow Associates, in Denver to work on hospitals, senior living, recreation centers and higher education projects. While working with this firm, I gained vast experience on the technical side of interior design. I was thrown headfirst into complete construction sets, learning Revit and trying to navigate my way through the intricate code system that had to be followed for these projects. I was fortunate to work on projects like the Poudre Valley Cancer Center in Ft. Collins, the re-branding of the University of Colorado Health Systems signage as well as some smaller boutique projects like Hosting.com’s corporate facility here in Denver. After about three years of working on healthcare projects and doing some residential work on the side, I decided to leave the commercial side of design and try my hand at residential design. Thanks to a very good friend and mentor, I was introduced to one of the most influential designers in Denver and was soon on a path down a whole new career.
Andrea Schumacher of Andrea Schumacher Interiors took a complete chance on me and immediately took me under her wing. I was thrown into an unknown world of the Denver Design Center, clients with homes I could only dream of working in and the vast world of custom furniture and high-end luxury design. During the years I worked for Andrea, I was able to cultivate my creativity and passion for residential design while also honing my skills for rendering, drawing, sourcing and pushing the limits of my creativity. In the time I worked for Andrea, I was able to contribute to projects including the Greystone Mansion show-home in Los Angeles, a stunning East Coast inspired mansion in Cherry Hills, as well as a serene mountain getaway on Peak 7 in Breckenridge, CO – to name just a few.
My next venture was with Devin Tobin and Miranda Cullen of Duet Design Group. I started working at Duet eight weeks after my daughter Hollyn was born and jumped in without a life jacket into a completely different kind of animal as far as residential firms are concerned. With Andrea, my creativity was fostered and at Duet, my skills for organization, attention to detail, and the actual ins and outs of running a design business were sharpened. I’ll have to be completely honest that I felt like I was drowning at times trying to keep with the level of attention to detail that was expected at Duet – but I’m thankful for that experience in that it made me a far better manager and made me realize exactly what I’m good at and where I need to learn and grow when it comes to running a successful interior design project and business. The culture that surrounded me at Duet was empowering and uplifting – working with strong women who are were insanely talented and determined to show the world that anything can be done was a monumental drive to starting my own business.
Which leads me to Hi-Luxe Interiors. I started this business in May of 2018 and haven’t looked back. My husband who’s been an entrepreneur his whole life was incredibly supportive and influential in my decision to go out on my own. Now that I have more than a year under my belt – I’ve learned a ton about interior design, business in general and also myself. I’m adding more work to my portfolio every month and couldn’t be more excited to take on what the future holds for Hi-Luxe. I’m currently working on projects all over the Metro Denver area including complete kitchen re-models, basement build-outs, furniture and art selections and consultation work as well! We’ve also just launched an online store, Hi-Luxe boutique that sells curated wares from local artisans. We wanted to create an experience that bridged the world of exclusive interior design to the rest of the Denver community. This is a unique place to buy something that nobody else has – you won’t find these items at major retail stores – and that’s exactly how I want to keep it. What I’m most proud of about the boutique is to say that I know each and every one of the people who have helped me bring this vision to life by trusting in me to help them sell their pieces, but also the fact that we’ve created a new community for people of all walks of life to come together to celebrate interior design and creativity.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In all honesty, after hearing some horror stories of people trying to open their own businesses, I’d say it’s been a relatively smooth road for me. When I first opened my doors, I had an abundance of support from friends and family as well as the Denver design community. Without any clients in the cue, I quickly filled my funnel with referral projects, some small and some large that continue to this day.
Of course, there’s been ups and downs including not always knowing if the next months income will pay the bills or if I’m making the right business decision – and lord knows trying to learn all about SEO, SEM, ROI and all those other acronyms that everyone seems to know (except me).
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Hi-Luxe Interiors – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Hi-Luxe is a full service residential design firm. Although the vast majority of our business is residential, we take on commercial and hospitality projects as well. We help clients with everything from new builds, renovations, remodels, furniture and art selection as well as smaller consultation projects.
Since we’ve been in business just over a year, I think it’s safe to say I’m not particularly known for anything yet – but I can say that we specialize in a low-drama, down-to-earth approach to interior design. My clients know that when they sign on with me, I’m 100% theirs from start to finish and I’ll have their back in any situation that may arise.
I think what I’m most proud of as a company is our reputation with clients. Being such a small business, everyone I work with knows me personally and we end up having a close relationship during the project and often times even after the project is complete. All my clients know about my family life and the day-to-day ins and outs of their projects. I’m constantly on site, texting, calling or working odd hours to make sure that my clients get the best possible experience when they’re working with Hi-Luxe.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The biggest plan for the future at this point is to have our second baby in September! This, of course, will have a small impact on the business right away, but I’m hoping with the support of family (two full time grandma’s ready to jump in), friends and my husband that Hi-Luxe will continue to grow and flourish even if I’m covered in spit up and chasing a toddler around! The nice thing about owning my own business is that I have the flexibility to work but also be a present mother. The struggle is real, but I’m a big believer that my kids will respect and love the fact that I continued to work and contribute financially to our household while also being able to make it to most everything important going on in their lives!
