Meet Lisa Garness Mallory of Colorado Etched Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Garness Mallory.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for art began in childhood. My dream was to become a professional artist and fine art and photography were my main interests. As an adult I worked for many years in commercial insurance and became a single mom for 10 years. Finally in 2009 I decided to live my dream and became a professional fine art photographer. I wanted to find a way to combine my fine art skills with digital photography. So I created my process of using wood carving tools and an engraver to hand etch on my mainly nature photography. I print photos on photo paper, canvas, and metal and then use my tools to scratch off the ink in various places on the photo. I don’t make a sketch of how the work will look before I start. I just start etching and let my imagination guide me to a finished piece. Each white line is my creative mark.

I’m a “pioneer forging new ground” in alternative photo processes. I call my etchings contemporary and “edgy.” I’m noted for unique use of line, texture, depth, light, and color.

I’m enjoying my artist journey. Etching photos will continue to evolve as my imagination leads me to new and exciting subjects.

I hope my work beings joy, excitement, and inspiration to vewers, along with love and respect for the natural world around us”.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In general I need more collectors and sales to be able to afford living in Colorado, it’s become very expensive to live here now.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have won 6 international photography awards and several awards nationally. I have been a featured artist on PBS which aired nationally and can be viewed on Youtube.com and my website. I was recently interviewed on Tenet Podcast. And my etched photos have been published in 7 Colorado magazines, and several international artist books. As far as I know now I am the only fine art photographer who hand etches on their photography.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Creating many different kinds of art projects with my artist mother. My talented parents were artistic. Mom was mainly an oil and acrylic painter, and dad designed and made sterling silver jewelry.
