Today we’d like to introduce you to Glit.
Glit, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been collecting pomade for years and my hair has always been a topic of conversation for my friends and teammates, so that is a little back story, but one day I was online finding some nice introduction pomades for my friend, and I kept reading “Men’s Grooming Products” in the descriptions or labels of a lot of pomades which honestly just annoyed me. I decided I might as well try to make my own pomade and maybe have a different company vibe than what is available. This also made me realize that a lot of people in roller derby (the sport I play) begin learning and playing the game, and break out of the gender expectations a bit, and cut their hair short. They feel confident and free and then realize that might not know how to style short hair!
That does a knock on your confidence, and when products are labeled “Men’s Grooming Products” but you don’t identify as male, that can be discouraging as well. Because of that, all of my scents and marketing are gender-neutral because fuck gender norms and expectations! Anyone should be able to have great hair that smells good! It took about three months of studying, brewing, and testing my products until I landed on the recipes I use and that I am very proud of. I worked with my teammate/friend Trample to design the logo, labels, and t-shirt artwork, my girlfriend Diosa and our teammate Woody to work on printing the shirts, and here we are! We just opened and we have a lot of support in the pomade, queer, and roller derby communities.
As for some of the culture of the company, Black Lives Matter and Abolishing ICE are two specific movements that we are very supportive of. Last year I made Abolish ICE shirts for my team and just gave them away to whoever wanted them. If someone wanted to pay for a shirt I would just donate it to R.A.I.C.E.S. With this company I have realized that I can use it as a platform to speak about what I believe in, so we have a few products whose profits go to these organizations year round, along with a few other promotional sales that solely go to charities.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been mostly smooth for me. Luckily I am a Capricorn so I have about three backup plans for anything that could go wrong and I am very thought out. The only snag that happened was with printing the shirts. We screen print our shirts here, and we were using a very specific kind of ink that was unfortunately clogging our screens so prints weren’t coming out that great. A lot of trial and error later, we found a great ink and a great method to keep that part of the process smooth!
Please tell us about Glass Hands Hair Co.
We are a hair product company, specializing in different kinds of pomade. We have products for any hair type/length but specialize in short hair products. We make everything by hand in small batches to ensure quality and freshness. We have a few things that set us apart from others. Primarily all of our products are gender neutral, whether it is the scent, marketing, or labels, anyone can feel comfortable and confident using our products. Another element that separates us from other companies is that we donate a portion of our profits to organizations that we believe in. For the month of August, all profits will be donated evenly between Black Lives Matter and R.A.I.C.E.S. We also make shirts that are always for sale whose profits will always go to those organizations as well!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly, I don’t think I would change anything! Like I said, I am a Capricorn so all of my decisions have been super thought out, whether it be ingredients, packaging, shipping, products in general, I have done a bunch of research and have found the options that I think best fit what this company is trying to do. I also don’t mind small mistakes (learning how to screen print or realizing a different packaging material is better than one I bought) because I just learn from it and don’t really get held up on things that went wrong.
