Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Buchanan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Liz. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Fuss Hair Studio came about kind of by accident. I entered the whole salon industry a little late in the game. I had first explored the corporate world and I had realized that I wanted to be directly rewarded for my hard work. I thought going into a skilled trade was the answer. Growing up, my dad always owned a salon so it felt familiar. After about six years of learning the trade, I started feeling it was time to start my own salon but with two children, ages two and three, I wasn’t sure I could manage it or afford it. My husband and I decided to go for it and eventually purchased an existing salon in Wash Park in Denver. When our rent tripled in 2018, we decided it was time to purchase a commercial property of our own. It felt like such a simple and straight forward plan and we purchased our new location at 2349 South Broadway. Then began an eighteen-month battle to open the salon. We finally did succeed and opened in September of 2019. I am so grateful to have my small part in the salon industry in Denver.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I doubt anyone has had an entirely smooth road when pushing your boundaries and doing something a little different. We had no idea what we were getting into when we bought our building. Between zoning, flood plain issues and countless other obstacles, it is amazing we were able to open. In every way we were pushed to the limit. We couldn’t afford to have our contractor, Lookout Renovation, do all the work, so we did a large portion ourselves. We have a lot of experience renovating properties, so we used all our skills and worked like crazy. It’s hard sometimes to think back on what we went through. It was really tough but with persistence and resilience, we were able to accomplish our goals.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Fuss Hair Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Fuss Hair Studio is a pretty simple enterprise. For me, it’s not about being the biggest or grandest salon in Denver. My goal is to have our salon be a sanctuary to both our guests and the stylists working in the salon. I believe that success is loving what you do and enjoying the camaraderie of the people you surround yourself in. At Fuss Hair Studio, we have an amazing team and wonderful guests that support and inspire us.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
When we finally opened, we vowed to all our friends that we were done. No more huge projects! It’s become a joke because we can’t seem to help ourselves. We are always doing some crazy projects. Unfortunately, I think it’s my nature to keep on dreaming about the next step. We will see where the future lies, but for now, I am truly happy and content exactly where I am.
