Meet Lowell Wightman of 360 Mindset in North Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lowell Wightman.

Lowell, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a student, my interests were in math and science and as an athlete, it was always proving that what I looked like did define what you were going to get. So, combining my academic desires with my athletic desires I am, to this day, a supporter of the underdog and developing performance intangibles like honor, courage, and integrity.

In college, I walked on to the University of Iowa basketball team after playing fall baseball with the Hawkeyes. A pre-med curriculum and basketball team demands moved to make choices that would influence my life forever. I was fortunate to have Dick Schultz and Lute Olson coach me. Regretfully I was injured and did not finish four years of competition.

It was experiences like these that enriched my views of performance excellence and yet it was not until 1991 that I started my consulting practice as a performance coach. I very seldom feel comfortable with the status quo so in 1991 I started using media and real-time observations to discover human behavior that would result in elite outcomes.

I started an AM radio show in Chicago called Ask Lowell that was sponsored by the Illinois CPA Society. This show allowed me to leverage my experience working as a financial planner and talk to an audience that was all about supporting the best strategies for improving performance. The show gave me access to guests such as Stephen Covey, Brian Tracy, Warren Bennis, Deepak Chopra, Denis Waitley and Mark Victor Hansen. Today, looking back on these names and their careers I am honored to have met them. It has been experiences such as these that continue to motivate me to discover strategies for developing elite performance outcomes.

During the late 90’s my consulting practice began adding a mix of elite athletes from the amateur and professional ranks providing a wonderful compliment to my corporate client engagements. I am often reminded how sports and sports activities influence family and business culture when business groups relate so quickly to a sports or coaching reference. The success of my practice is anchored identifying common ground and then facilitating the connection for elite outcomes. When first meet an elite athlete I am often asked “why do I need you I am already at the top of my game?”, and my response is “you want to stay at the top, right?”. It is a moment like this that reminds me of human desire, from within, defines one’s actions and what we define as success.

As a performance coach, I use data from measuring human desires and technology; including social media, to demonstrate the power of process and not the lure of the prize that will be sustaining your excellence. Staying on top of your game.

As the founder and CEO of 360 Mindset, I work with any industry or individual that desires to challenge themselves with people and things that will improve their quality of life.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A smooth road provides a comfortable ride, but it is the occasional bump or surface changes that offer a challenge to personally dig deeper while one adapts and adjusts to the unexpected. For me, these roads are great teachers.

My greatest struggle has always been with myself. I could bore you with stories about money I have lost, people who have failed me, or the opportunity I should have taken but did not. We all have stories that define our journey and struggles are a part of everyone’s journey.

Understanding this reality has taught me to remove negative being mindful that this effort leaves me with the opportunity to participate in positive actions. So, smoothing the road ahead of me is in my control how I prepare the road will define the degree of influence people and things have in defining the degree to which I struggle.

I don’t struggle anymore. I make connections with people that align with what I desire so that as I encounter obstacles and challenges I am resolute and responsive. Removing negatives leaves me with no struggle, but rather opportunity to improve myself.

Please tell us about 360 Mindset – what should we know?
In simplest form, my business is one that provides performance consulting for individuals and groups. I specialize in delivering my consulting/coaching to high-performance athletes and C-suite executives. I am known for building trust quickly while identifying changes to behavior that will deliver outcomes beyond expected outcomes.

I am most proud of the strategies and methods I have developed for applying human desire measurements into performance improvement plans. This sets my practice apart from my colleagues who focus on leadership, human development and sports psychology. Every individual or group I work with has their human desires measured with a scientifically developed process that looks at each human participant before considering inclusion into a group or team setting.

With my methods, I am using numerical models and historical success to recommend strategies that have a high probability of predicting the frequency of success. Success that is specific to the individual and/or the team.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My life partner Diane deserves and has earned my love and admiration for 40 years. As CPA and business professional she a grounding force to my oftentimes overzealous, not well-directed energy. Diane is both a business and a personal guiding force for me.

Professionally, I give credit to mentors such as Professor Carole Makela, Colorado State University, Dr. Steven Reiss, Author, The Reiss Motivational Profile, Stephen Covey, Author, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Then there are those who have played a role in supporting the success of me and my business.

These same supports are also considered cheerleaders, friends and colleagues, there is no one term that would or could best describe them. For example, Nikki Burnett, Functional Nutritionist, Taste Life Nutrition, has helped me improve my health and is an advisor on my web-based Radio/Television show. Then there is Lisa Kennedy, Writer and Entertainment Critique. Lisa is a great sound boarding who does not tell me what I want to hear but rather shares truths that support my writing and guides me with amazing insight.

In my world professional relationships oftentimes turn into lasting friendships. To be your best you must trust others and let them into your world and thoughts. So, my individual coaching relationships become wonderful friendships. Curtis Granderson, professional baseball player, I have known since coaching him in high school now he is a friend who coaches me.
