Today we’d like to introduce you to Luna Nunez.
Luna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Some people are lucky enough to understand what they want out of life from a young age, and I was one of them. I used to go around telling folks that I was going to be a “rockstar.” After my family finally indulged my requests and bought me a guitar, I began acquainting myself with the instrument. All through grade school, I maintained an interest in my musical craft and journaling. I attended a middle school of the arts and picked up the Violin when I was told guitar wasn’t an option in the program. Finally, when it came time to pick a college major, I decided to look my passion in the eye and became a performance music major with a concentration in songwriting. Although I had less than a handful of original songs I took seriously when I started college, I believed in my abilities to create good music.
In college, I took a variety of ensembles to broaden my stylistic influences. Among the ensembles I took was a Bluegrass ensemble, where I was playing fiddle and my future bandmate Riley Merino was playing banjo. We got to know each other in a musically communicative context, and shortly after, he introduced me to his roommate and fellow music major, Alec Doniger. The three of us are talented singers and multi-instrumentalists and after our first jam in July, we decided that we have a special dynamic and sound as a trio and should become a band. Before we even had a band name picked out, we landed a handful of Denver gigs via social media interest. The band, Dream Pool, just completed their first run of Denver shows and are now recording their unique sound so they can expand their audience on the road this summer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a journey of emotional ups and downs, fighting the societal pressure to give up on my artistic dreams. In high school, I heavily considered going into the medical industry but realized that I couldn’t exist happily within the strict confines of mainstream medicine. After experiencing an awakening yoga teacher training, I realized that sound – music – my passion – can also be incredibly healing. I decided to dedicate my songwriting practice to concepts that need to be considered on a universal scale.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My band, Dream Pool, consists of a trio of multi-talented music majors attending the University of Colorado Denver. We can be considered an Indie Rock band with Shoegaze and Math Rock influences. You can get excited about our engaging musical ideas and minimalistic, harmonized lyrics that pack a punch.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was around seven years old, I performed a cover for the first time. That cover was Good Riddance by Green Day. I was so excited that I got to live out my punk rock dreams, that I continued to live them to this day.
