Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynn Townsend.
Lynn, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I found myself being drawn to the magic of photography in high school, where I spent countless hours watching images appear in the darkroom. I was enthralled! I decided to follow this newfound passion, and it led me to journalism school at the University of Missouri, where I learned documentary photography and how to tell a complete story through images.
After college, I worked for several magazines and newspapers, both in the US and abroad. I had also begun incorporating a deep love of other cultures into my life, and I taught English as a Second Language in Spain and Brazil. When I finally returned to the United States, I followed my yearning to work with people in a different way, and I began incorporating portraiture and weddings into my repertoire.
I met my husband in a photo gallery where we both entered photographs from our travels into a contest. Little did we know that our love of photography would lead to nearly 15 years of working together, documenting some of life’s most meaningful moments. The year we married, we combined our photography businesses, and we’ve never looked back.
Alongside our career, we have always volunteered our time, giving back to the community through photography. Several years ago, I joined the team at Picture Me Here, an organization that teaches refugees and immigrants to tell their own stories through photography. It has been such an incredible experience working with these resilient, wise, hard-working people, and it has deeply impacted my life.
This year, I have been listening deeply to my heart, and I finally began a project of my own to tie all these loves together. It is called the ‘Sisterhood Photo Project.’ This project combines my love of photography, bridging cultures and also celebrating the feminine spirit.
For each woman who purchases an Authentic Portrait Session, I donate another session to a refugee or immigrant woman. I have found that we all need to be seen, and we need to have our own light reflected back to us. The purpose of this project is to stoke this inner fire, help it burn even brighter, and let it propel women forward. The immigrants and refugees I have had the honor of serving are from Iraq, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Uganda, Afghanistan and more. These sisters have lived through immense tragedy, heartache or loss, yet they are survivors. My desire is to listen deeply to their stories, offer support on their healing journey, and celebrate them as strong, beautiful individuals.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh, self-employment is never an easy road! My husband, Dave, and I started our business, travelled, got married, had two children, and still continue to search for the best ways to find balance.
I find the pull between business, marriage, self-care, and motherhood to be ever-challenging. There have been countless days that I have wanted to throw in the towel and find a job that would finish promptly at 5 pm, rather than working all hours of the day and night. Since our business is cyclical, we find ourselves in moments of exhaustion from working so much and also moments of wondering when the next job will schedule in.
However, we also find that we are able to be present for all the moments of our children’s lives, and this is the most important thing to us. We’ve been there for each and every milestone, we’ve been able to take our children on long travel adventures creating lifelong memories, and through it all, we’ve been able to do it together.
David Lynn Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We truly see our clients and are ever-aware of the importance of trust. We don’t try to force people into a certain pose, but instead, we learn about who they are, help them feel comfortable and at ease, and allow our sessions to unfold in a genuine way.
We also love coming to clients as a husband and wife team, because it allows us to connect in such a unique way. As a couple, we truly understand the deep significance of marriage, beginning a family and watching our children grow. Whereas many family and wedding photographers shoot alone or use an assistant, we are able to offer two artistic eyes and the experience of two professionals.
As the market fills with more and more photographers, we treasure the experience we’ve gained in the past 15 years, and we know how to roll with rainy weather on a wedding day, children having meltdowns, and people who have difficulty relaxing in front of the camera. Some things can only be learned through experience, and we’re grateful to have it!
We are most proud of the genuine connection that we form with our clients. Many of our clients have been with us for over ten years! We’ve photographed their weddings, their children as newborns and helped to document them through the years. Their families become like our family.
We also love following our individual passions to offer unique experiences such as the Authentic Women’s Portrait Sessions that I do, and the amazing workshops that Dave offers. We build upon our strengths and support each other with each endeavor. We always build adventure into our offerings, and we love collaborating with our clients!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is leading a meaningful and fulfilled life. For us, this includes time as a family, raising and learning from our children, and doing work that positively impacts others.
I always think about what I will remember at the end of my life, and I know the best memories will come from the moments of life that were infused with love. Creating memories and relationships that focus on this continually brings me back to what is important.
