Today we’d like to introduce you to Major Leek.

Major, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love for music comes from listening to the pioneers of the Congolese rumba such as the Madilu system, Koffi Olomide, Papa Wemba. I was born Malik Kohokassa in the Republic Democratic of the Congo in 1998.

I began making music in high school along side two other artists from Denver. Arthur Blessing & Stylish Goldiee both helped me learn the basics of self-production, beat making on the software Logic Pro. After high school, I went to college for foreign affairs as I came back to the city early Jan 2019 I went ahead and released my first single “ small talk” which featured summer nytes. After releasing “small talk” I went on to release my solo debut single “ HAD A DREAM”.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
A smooth road no not at all, and I believe part of that is because the music scene in Colorado has yet to be created and I’m not trying to knock anybody who’s been doing this before me but we’re all pioneers, creators of this Denver music scene. my main struggles were more on a supportive level & booking shows, in an aspect I just want my sound to be international, not just a Denver artist. booking shows in Denver isn’t like booking shows in other cities, no I haven’t performed outside the city yet but I’ve seen the process promoters and club owners are eager to put it out the next big artist in places like ATL, NYC even Texas but our promoters are money driven not saying pay to play is bad but hosting something where locals can have a chance to show out would be dope.

I am a musician, performer and lyricist.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I were to start over I’d definitely make connections first and make sure my sound is where I want it I be before I go public as an artist also I’d have way more content ready.
