Today we’d like to introduce you to Malik Carter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Malik. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started doing music in the 4th grade, around 2005, and eventually fell deeper in love with it as I listened to more and tried to really study the sonics of music. When I started making beats I never thought that producing was an actual job because I was just having fun with the process.
The first step I took was getting on a Casio keyboard to make songs from scratch. I didn’t know what I was doing but it felt right and I got the hang of it over time. It went from that to producing for my friends on software programs. Then to now; Figuring out how to turn my production into a self-branding product which will eventually turn into a collective of individuals all working together for the love of creation!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road when you have to transfer ideas in your head into something tangible. The main obstacle is FEAR. Because making music is so vulnerable, I sometimes get held back by the fear of consumers not liking the product. It’s easy to make it for yourself but as soon as you show it to the world it’s out there and you can’t take it back. It’s not just music it’s showing the world your inner thoughts and how you see things from your point of view. Hence, the fear in expressing yourself to the world is the fear of disagreement or agreement from the world towards your beliefs.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My business is a production company that just consists of myself for now. I label myself as a producer which means to me to cater to the artist’s vision and trying to make the best product that you can make together. I’m proud of myself because I stand by my integrity and loyalty as a musician. Money is the last thing on my mind when creating and what sets me apart from others is that I only work with people I want to create with and love what they do.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory as a child was when I won first place for an art project in school. I drew a collage of random things that I liked and it got posted up in the hallways of the school. It made me feel like what I was doing was something special.
