Meet Malkohm Horn of Boulder MetalWorks in East Boulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Malkohm Horn.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Art has always been a part of my life. My fourth-grade teacher Ms. Sandoval gave us what she called Squiggle books. It was a notebook in which she would draw a little squiggle of a line. The assignment was to create an image from the squiggle and then write a short story about the image. I still work this way today, letting the object create the story and rarely the other way around. I did a lot of 2-d work early on and eventually found my way to sculpture. My 2-d background now drives my love of patina art and surface manipulation (both color and texture) that is an integral aspect of my craft.

I studied art at the California College of the Arts in Oakland/SF and earned a BFA at the University of AZ in Tucson. While in Tucson, I was given the great opportunity to work on several large scale public artworks under the tutelage of Joshua Sarantitis and William Wilson at Hozhographos Studios. I moved to Boulder, CO in 2007 and currently own and operate a metal fabrication and design company called Boulder Metalworks. When I’m not busy creating custom metal projects for my clients, I am working on various other artistic pursuits ranging from sculpture and art-furniture to large scale Burningman art cars. My favorite mediums include, but are not limited to, steel, bronze, copper, wood, ceramic, paint, patina, light and sound.

Has it been a smooth road?
A road with no obstacles rarely leads anywhere interesting. Some challenges we carry with us throughout our lives. Though there have been many obstacles along the way, I am grateful for the lessons. I’ve struggled with depression, addiction, panic disorder, and hopelessness. I have worked hard for what I have and who I have become, but I did not do it on my own. My friends and my family who have grown alongside me have supported me and given me the strength to be here now. This is the sentiment that I carry into my work, I do it with love, compassion and a desire for connection. Our expression is our conduit, our creation is our connection.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Definitely! Denver has always been a creative hub. In 1999, I collaborated on an artistic endeavor known as Soulciety. It was an art collective situated in what is now called the rhino district. At the time, there were very few warehouse culture spaces in the Denver area. Revolutiones was one of them and we considered them our sister space alongside Monkey Mania at the time. To be followed by Linoleum and then, The Union (later to become the home of Theory and Practice)situated in the heart of the Santa Fe arts district. This concept of art creation and collective connection continues to thrive and support the creative culture in the region. Denver still remains one of the great cities of opportunity for artists and creatives. The love is strong and the heArt beats on!
