Today we’d like to introduce you to Malory Toscano.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Malory. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I fell in love with calligraphy right before my husband and I got engaged about five years ago. A friend of mine was trying it out and I thought I’d give it a shot with an online course. After a couple of minutes of the online course, I just couldn’t stick with it, so I figured I’d teach myself. I scoured Instagram, following every calligraphy account I could find to try to figure out how they were making their letters so dang pretty. Once I somewhat figured it out, I became obsessed with getting it right. I practiced for hours a night until I got the hang of it. Once I did and started to get better, I thought there were probably people in a similar boat to me and would likely benefit from hands-on, live instruction. So, I started teaching at River North Workshop (now Birdsall + Co in Backyard on Blake) three years ago and haven’t looked back since. While workshops are the majority of my business, I do also offer calligraphy for events (mainly weddings).
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I also work a demanding full-time job, so finding the time to invest in my business is, by far, the biggest challenge. Instagram can also be brutal. Seeing other businesses like mine get more likes and more engagement on social can be tough. I have to remind myself that everyone is on their own journey. Instagram isn’t reality.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
Line + Light is a calligraphy business. I specialize in wedding calligraphy (i.e., place cards, signage, envelopes, etc.) but am most well-known for my workshops. And that’s probably what I’m most proud of. I still remember teaching my first workshop and I love seeing my students get excited about calligraphy.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Denver is so freaking awesome. The community is unlike anywhere I’ve been before. What I like least: the dang cost. 🙂
