Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Penn.
Mandy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started with photography from the other side of the camera! I was a model, and I was so interested in the entire process. But after one really bad modeling experience, I decided modeling was not the part of this art form that I loved, and I decided to learn more about photography. I also had twins, and at one point, I realized they were growing up WAY TOO FAST. I pulled out the camera my husband bought me and started shooting, and I’ve never looked back. I’ve found success in my business, and I’ve loved every moment! I can’t fathom doing anything else.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have experienced a lot of the regular obstacles photographers and business owners face, but I’d say my biggest obstacle or challenge has been recognizing my value. For the longest time, I compared myself to other photographers, and I tried to undercut their prices in order to entice people to use me. I realized I was so unhappy and wasn’t valuing my time, my art form, or my expertise. When I decided to value myself, my time away from my family, my client’s time, and my expertise, I found my happiness and my success. I am worth more than two dollars an hour!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am a boutique photographer specializing in family photos, newborn sessions, and high school senior photos. I do traditional sessions and creative themed shoots, and I even went viral for my Friends newborn shoot! I take pride in creating stunning images that are archival quality and can be hung on walls and passed down through generations in each family. I do more than take photos, I create an entire experience. From the moment of our first consultation to the moments you look at your photos over the fireplace, every step is intentional and special.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, I want to thank my husband, Caleb. He has been by far my biggest support and encouragement, providing for our family and constantly pushing me to be better. I wouldn’t be here without him! I also want to thank just a few of my biggest cheerleaders: Alexa, Kim, Melissa, Bri, Paige, Jenner, Ashley, and Dannika, who always remind me of my worth!
I want to thank Dannika for all of her work copywriting and doing all the assistant things. I want to thank Ashley for helping me with my total rebrand! I want to thank Alexa, who leads me, encourages me, supports me, and challenges me. And finally, I want to thank all of my clients, the Friends of the past who have brought me to this point, and the Friends of the present and future, who will continue to be by my side in my new business model. I literally can’t do this without you!
