Meet Marek Hosek of mhdezign in Westminster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marek Hosek.

Marek, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being creative was always part of my childhood. My uncle “John” used to babysit me once in a while. He was an artist. I used to look at his paintings and thought how cool and different they were. He once told me that art does not have to be one way, we can all create what we want and make it our own. There is no magic formula, just have to go out and do it.

In my teens and early adulthood, I painted and made things all the time. My parents ran a restaurant in Chicago where I made my drawings on a napkin and even wrote lyrics to songs during downtimes. From them, I painted my images on canvas. Many of my friends were attending colleges and I never had the desire to go and get a degree. One day, someone at the restaurant told me about an amazing art school called “The School of the Art Institute of Chicago”. I went in and showed my work. They let me study there. Everything changed for me from that point forward.

After graduating four years later, I still worked at the family business but freelanced on the side. Eventually, it turned into a small business for myself. I was super happy. Fast forward 18 years later, I am still in business for myself. In between, I worked in many creative agencies, showed in many galleries, created using many mediums, and always pushed myself to be curious and uncomfortable. The majority of my work has been on the commercial side, but lately, I have been pushing myself to dive back into what started it all for me from the beginning, create fine art just because I want to. We will see what the next decade has in store for me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is there such a thing as a smooth road in the art field? Each year in business comes with its own challenges. The main one is getting clients which are not just one stop and see you later. Many projects are one-offs and you never hear from the clients again.

I have been fortunate to have great relationships with clients who tend to want to work on projects over and over. It’s really what has kept my business going for over 18 years. It also helps to have a wonderful support group around me of family, friends and other creatives. It’s always good to have people around me who I can reach out to when those rainy days come. (And they will).

So, as you know, we’re impressed with mhdezign – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

I am most proud of being able to help clients succeed in so many different industries, from product packaging to digital social media, to creating advertising campaigns and marketing plans. The benefit of what we do is we become experts in our client’s business and help them put a brand voice and image to what they are trying to accomplish. Every project is challenging and rewarding. We love what we do. I think there are so many creative agencies and people out there who are doing amazing work. What sets us apart from others is thinking outside the box and attacking visual problems from within. We don’t like to settle for what the trends are today, but rather what the trends will be 5-10 years from now.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Being in business for almost 20 years and running my own design studio has been amazing. I would love to continue building my design studio and creating lasting relationships with people who recognize the value of great design.

I have also dove back into my roots, which is creating fine art. This kind of work is more personal has the power to overflow into all aspects of life. Painting and drawing is where my creative outlet started and I feel that spark entering into my life once again. Not for clients or even income, but mainly for my mental health. It’s pretty exciting!
