Today we’d like to introduce you to Margo Wanberg.
Margo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I, Margo, became a beekeeper shortly after college, I threw myself into the hobby. The whole shabam… bee clubs, bee events, lessons, multiple hives, and books upon books. I put one hive in my sister-in-law, Carolyn’s back yard and the other in my sister-in-law, Kait’s backyard. When it came time to harvest, I could hardly wait to see the liquid gold honey come out from my frames. I made an appointment at the local bee store to spin my honey in their extractor.
It’s what all the beekeepers in Denver seem to do, so I joined the party. I showed up at the bee store with my sister, Carolyn, tagging along. It was hot. It was sweaty. There were so many bees flying around and the extractor broke. It broke mid-spin and it took all our force to hold the machine in place so we could finish our harvesting. It was magical. The whole experience. The sweaty, the sticky, the messy, the hardwork… it was perfectly imperfect but we knew we could make this better for clients. We then spent the following year thinking of how we could make a harvesting facility that was also FDA approved and sanitary as well as clean, enjoyable, professional, and simple. We did it. We just started putting the puzzle pieces together and now we have the only FDA approved sanitary harvesting facility in Denver. We also put on workshops, classes, and other fun events throughout the summer months.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Is a small business ever a smooth road? I’ve yet heard of one. Our road is lined with flowers but it has taken pivots and roundabouts and wrong turn for sure but we now are on a road that is still bumpy but it’s the enjoyable kind. After a year of running the business as sister in laws and life taking its inevitable turns, we realized it would be best to not continue to run the business as a trifecta. Carolyn became a mother and Kait moved to the Netherlands. I, Margo, bought and continued the business. With their support and love, even from afar, it still remains the three sisters harvesting company with the same heart to welcome, support, and educate our clients with all their harvesting needs.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 3 Sisters Honey Harvesting story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a harvesting company located in N. Aurora off East Colfax. We help beekeepers harvest and jar their honey. We have a sanitary facility with an extractor, three compartment sink, hot water hose, a fully tiled room, and air conditioning (it matters). We have a variety of services. We offer clients to rent out our space and harvest on their own, we teach harvesting lessons, and we also harvest for our clients in a drop off service. We put together monthly workshops in the summer months. We also offer beginning beekeeping course.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck played any part. I think hard work. A supportive (VERY) family, incredible clients, and joyful employees are the key factors as well as wonderful community partners. I don’t think we got lucky. I think we are just starting to see the harvest of hardwork and consistency.
