Meet Mary Gardner of Hairfairymary in Colorado Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Gardner.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey started in 2014 back in Illinois. I made my way out to Colorado in late 2016. That’s where my career really took off.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Colorado is full of a bunch of wonderful people and I am from such a small town that Colorado Springs is so big to me. So in my eyes, if I can make it work in a small town I can make it work in a big town.

My first salon and actually the only salon I’ve worked at since I’ve been out here is House of color in Colorado Springs. I got kind of lucky with that one because House of color is very well known. That mixed with my hard work made my journey just that much smoother.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a hairstylist specializing in blonding and hand-tied extensions. The thing I’m most proud of is moving out here knowing absolutely no one and building my career from the ground up. I think it’s very hard in this industry to stay motivated because there are so many people that do hair, but that’s why you have to find your niche and just be the best you can be at it.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very outgoing, I just love meeting new people, being around people, making other people feel wanted and good about themselves. I am from a really big family, I have three brothers and four sisters. I think that has taught me to be outgoing because you don’t really have a choice coming from that.
