Meet Mat Schramm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mat Schramm.

Hi Mat, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My background in creative direction is what led me to my career in photography. For 10 years before I started as a wedding photographer full time, I was strategizing on brand and website direction with large, national nonprofit campaigns and startup companies. All of my past experiences have been able to come together in creating this photography business that’s grown so much over the past four years.

As a wedding photographer, I focus on active, genuine interaction that creates authentic expressions and lets my couples connect with each other on a deeper level because I want couples who work with me to be able to look back on their wedding photos years from now and remember how they felt on their wedding day.

My work has been in local and national media including The Today Show, Huffpost, Rocky Mountain Bride, PBS, and Couture Colorado.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Covid introduced an entire new set of obstacles and challenges for people in the event industry. In 2020, all but two couples who hired me decided to reschedule their weddings to 2021. That left me in March 2020 without most of the work I thought I’d have for the year.

I decided to find some extra freelance work so that I could invest in my photography business during the slower time. I created an entire new brand, website, and client experience with the help of some one-on-one coaching and mentorship. At the time it was an incredible risk to be spending resources to improve the business without a ton of new work coming in but I hoped it would benefit me longer term and thankfully it has.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Most couples worry that their wedding photography will end up looking awkward or cheesy.

That’s why the experience I give the couples I work with is so important. I want to get to know the couples who hire me so the images from their wedding will reflect the story of how their wedding day unfolded. I had a manager once who always said we needed to “surprise and delight” our clients, and I’ve always kept that with me. My favorite thing about my job is giving my clients not just images that tell the story of their wedding day, but also an incredible experience they can’t wait to rave about.

My style focuses on active, genuine interaction that creates real, authentic expressions and profound connection. My goal is to capture all the unnoticed moments and my clients’ unique personalities. Ultimately, I want them to be able to look at their wedding album years from now and see images that help them remember exactly how they felt on their wedding day.

What matters most to you?
I spend time with each couple who reaches out making sure I’m the right fit. It’s important that I work with couples who want wedding images that tell the story of their day.

And when you’re able to connect and feel comfortable with your wedding photographer, then you’ll have really natural images that show all those joyful moments and emotions you’ll love to look back on years from now.
