Meet Matt Salis of Sober and Unashamed in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Salis.

Matt, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For the longest time, I was an alcoholic in denial. Now, I’m an alcoholic in recovery – and I’m pretty loud about it. I write and speak about my disease and what it took for me to overcome. I believe the stigma associated with alcoholism is the reason it is the most prolific epidemic we face with over 15 million alcoholics in the United States. Over three million people a year die alcohol-related deaths, yet we pour billions into advertising to make sure everyone knows life is incomplete without alcohol.

Alcoholism is a curable brain disease, but only if perceptions and attitudes change. And that is what I’m trying to do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Reaching people – being heard over the noise and clutter – remains my greatest challenge. I have a message of hope based on an understanding of brain chemistry and recovery nutrition, which is helping people when I reach them. Alcoholism is not just a spiritual weakness as it is treated in traditional forms of recovery. It is a lot more involved than that. My following is growing steadily because my message resonates with so many high-functioning alcoholics who struggle. Spreading the word that there is another way to find freedom is my greatest challenge.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I emphasize the power of recovering out loud. When we tell our stories of addiction and recovery for all to hear, two significant things happen. First, others hear our tales of triumph and find the strength to earn their own sobriety. Second, we solidify our own sobriety when we are open about it. When we tell our stories of pain and misery, it makes it hard to relapse and return to unhealthy even deadly habits.

Surviving the very challenging waters of early sobriety is daunting and vital. Please check out my free ebook, Guide to Early Sobriety. You can download it for free, here: https://soberandunashamed.com/guide-to-early-sobriety/

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
None, really. Success in changing perceptions and making a lasting impact is all about persistence and handling rejection. To open a few doors, I have to put my shoulder into a lot of them. I have learned to keep going undeterred when I face obstacles, anticipated or unexpected.
