Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew McGibney.
Matthew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got my start at the Colfax Guitar Shop on East Colfax with Scott and John Baxendale. I worked with them for a few years before branching out on my won with McGibney Guitars. Since then I’ve built custom guitars for people all over the world, and traveled as a guitar tech for different bands.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to where I am today hasn’t been horribly difficult, but I wasn’t able to make a living at it right away either. I worked a second job for many years while I built a following and then decided a couple years ago that I needed to make a go at it full time. I’ve been building, repairing, and touring as a guitar tech to make it all work. The hardest part may be having to leave my family for extended periods of time when I’m out on tour.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
McGibney Guitars builds custom guitars from the ground up. We build anything from a run of the mill Telecaster style build to a fully customized guitar that has been designed by the customer, and anything in between. we build everything by hand, one at a time, and take pride in the craftsmanship and quality that go into each one of our guitars. In addition, we’ve been winding pickups, and so were able to help the customer dial in their sound hat much more. what makes us different from a lot of companies is that since everything is done in house, by hand, we can take any idea that somebody has and turn it into an amazing handmade instrument.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents deserve a lot of credit for supporting me along the way – from my teenage years building scrap wood guitars in the garage, to helping me get my business off the ground, and still today, doing everything they can to help get my name and products out there. Also, my wife is a huge part of me being able to do this full time. her support and encouragement mean so much to me.
