Today we’d like to introduce you to Mawule.
Mawule, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Ebenezer Yebuah and I am better known by my artist name, Mawule. I am a R&B/soul singer, songwriter, and music business entrepreneur. I was born and raised in Accra, Ghana and grew up in Denver, Colorado. My Family and I moved to Denver on January 2, 2000, and I’ve been here ever since. My connection and love for music started at the age of 5 in the church. I was constantly surrounded by gospel music, Presbyterian Hymns, and lots of Kirk Franklin songs. Over time, gospel music felt like home and served as the grounding for my music journey. At the age of 13, I started to write lyrics as a way to make meaning of my life experiences and soon after, I pursued studio recordings to develop my sound. I continued to pursue my music aspirations during my undergraduate and graduate careers and became a full time commitment after The Spot Studios producer Glenn Sawyer reached out after discovering my published work on Reverb Nation.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Self-investment is always a challenge. There’s always moments when one debates between giving up or pushing forward. To keep the momentum going, I invest a lot of time connecting with music executives on LinkedIn and seek mentorship, ask questions, and build relationships to help me along the way.
Please tell us about your music.
My music is thought-provoking, honest, soothing and empowering. My passion for human connection is present and noticeable in my music. I cover topics surrounding social justice, diversity, relationships, and other subject matters all crowned in a cloak of deep lyrics and catchy rhythms.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ambition and forwarding thinking mindset has fueled my success. I’ve been able to get this far with no formal music training. Everything has been self-taught from a young age and my knowledge continues to grow with every opportunity. I am a theory to practice entrepreneur so I’m always learning, applying and assessing to further my music brand.
