Meet MayG of MAYGTHEHUMAN

Today we’d like to introduce you to MayG.

MayG, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been painting and creating forever but started to turn my passion into a career in 2014. I moved from my home state, Oklahoma, to Denver four years ago to further pursue my art. Since then, I’ve been showcasing at every art show and pop-up available growing my craft.

I’ve always loved wearing fun clothes that no one else had, I basically lived at the thrift store back in college. I started only painting on canvases and home decor items before I had the epiphany that I could make my own clothes. I quickly learned after creating custom costumes and outfits for myself, that was where I could really shine. I love making one of a kind clothing items and accessories, that’s what I focus on now.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So many struggles. I think creatives deal with more of these than anyone. For me, one of the biggest speed bumps to get over was finding a job to support myself and my goals while also finding time to pursue my own business. I know some people have this talent, but listen, I can NOT work a job that I don’t enjoy. I will drive myself into the deepest depression hole if I’m not happy with what I’m doing. I have been teaching paint and sip classes, face painting, and balloon twisting to support myself and my art since I moved to Denver. Hit me up for your kid’s next party 🙂

One of the biggest challenges I am facing right now is the business side of my art. I don’t like posting on social media, mostly because I know I need to and it stresses me out to the point where I just put the phone down. I hate trying to get good quality pictures of my art and uploading to a website. Basically, I’d love to just paint in my studio and not do much else. I used to have less trouble keeping up with that stuff, but my passion for painting has grown and grown, now I never want to put the paintbrush down. That being said, I am on the lookout for an art manager! An art career is just as much a business as any other (I keep telling myself over and over).

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MAYGTHEHUMAN – what should we know?
I am known for super colorful, positively weird, and absolutely bold clothing items and accessories. I am confident that anyone who knows my work, will spot it out knowing its a MAYG original. My designs are all over the place, but the finished product is always very neat and hard to tell it was hand-painted. I’ve spent years experimenting with different kinds of paints and sealers so that my work will be practical and last a long time. I haven’t told anyone about my next big project yet, but I am currently working on a children’s clothing line! My clothes are too loud or outgoing for some adults, but kids have all the confidence so I thought it was time to reach out to them as an audience. I picture my brand goals in the future to be a cross between Lisa Frank and Betsey Johnson.
