Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Broadaway.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
If you would have told me ten years ago that I would have my own design business focused on weddings, I would not have believed it! I started my journey here with a Design degree from the University of Texas where I had every intention of a long career in graphic design. Out of school, I worked in various corporate graphic design and marketing roles; which was quite honestly pretty unfulfilling for someone with so much creative passion!
I was first introduced to the wedding world after numerous friends and family members requested invitation designs and quickly fell in love with the joy of designing for events. With that joy, I opened shop part time as Whimsy Design Studio in 2014 and left the corporate world for good the following year. Since then, I’ve grown beyond my graphic design roots to incorporate hand lettering, calligraphy, illustration and lots of watercolor into my work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would say nothing about being an entrepreneur is smooth! When I started out I was working a full-time corporate job and just designing for weddings on the side. Then, I was lucky enough to be able to quit that corporate job to pursue Whimsy full time and with long hours, lots of networking, and flexibility I was able to build my business up. Flash forward five years and now, I’m back to working (basically) part-time with my one-year-old daughter at home with me full time! Through all these chapters, balancing my business goals with my personal life has always been a struggle but I’ve found that if you have a good support system and tackle each new chapter with an attitude of transparency and humility with your clients, then things will be a lot easier.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Whimsy Design Studio – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Whimsy Design Studio is a boutique graphic design and art studio that specializes in weddings and events. Our passion is creating wedding designs that capture our client’s unique style and wow their guests. We use a mix of graphic design, hand lettering, illustration, and watercolor painting to craft invitation suites, signage, paper décor, and day-of details to complete the look of any event.
Our signature style is vibrant and playful (hence the name “Whimsy”) with bold color palettes and fun lettering choices. We aim to create wedding designs as unique as each couples’ individual love story!
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Whimsy is currently in a state of transition as I have become a “work-from-home Mom” with less time for custom projects. Right now, we are growing our Invitation Collection – a small selection of pre-designed stationery suites that are ready for purchase and personalization, currently in the form of an Etsy shop. This is a great option for couples because they can get that signature fun Whimsy design style for the fraction of the cost, and then add on smaller custom projects like watercolor wedding crests or hand-painted map designs to complete their dream invitation suite! I am currently working on streamlining the personalization process and exploring some different options for the best way to bring these designs to our clients.
