Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Campbell.
Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Barre in the Park started in July 2015 because I was looking for something different, something “extra” when it came to Barre and the workouts I was getting at some of the local gyms in my neighborhood. I had been taking barre for two years by then, including my entire second pregnancy and was approached about getting certified as an instructor. At the time, I was struggling with what “I wanted to be when I grew up” and was a working mom with two children, so I figured this could be a great idea but I was scared of failing.
I looked into all of the different franchise options but I always came back to the fact that I always wanted to be my own boss. I was certified by Definitive Barre Fitness, recognized by the American Fitness Association of America in May 2015 and from there my concept for starting my business grew. I was by then teaching at 4 different gyms in and around Denver and occasionally I would have people tell me that the classes were “too hard” or “they weren’t strong enough”. I have always thought that if you are working out or taking a Barre class you should never feel like you had to go and do cardio, lift more weights or do another class to get the workout you needed for the day and that is how Barre in the Park started! Barre in the Park was the FIRST Barre specific business in NE Denver at the time and I loved every second of being creative, helping people achieve their goals through exercise and building a community within Stapleton that I would eventually call my friends and family!
Fast forward to November 2015 when it got cold!!! Up until then, all classes had been outside in the park (hence the name Barre in the Park) but I never imagined that this business and concept would be so popular so I quickly threw together a studio in my garage with carpeting, mirrors, and one Barre to keep going through the winter. In August of 2016, I decided to move on from the park concept and keep everything inside my newly finished studio with its hardwood floors, mirrors, multiple barre’s, retail space, equipment, and our continued amazing class atmosphere.
Fast forward again as we approach the third anniversary of this homegrown business and the rebranding of Barre in the Park! As with any concept or idea, CHANGE is paramount to growth. In life, there is always evolution and change. Our new brand name better incorporates MY vision from the past and OUR vision of the future.
Meet BARRE CENTRAL!
Our new name not only incorporates its first location and the surrounding area and is the first and only non-franchise Barre studio in the 80238-zip code but it also reflects commitment, resilience, community, creativity, ingenuity, intrigue and above all fitness. I can not wait for all the exciting changes that will happen for this business and I look forward to sharing it with all of you!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been “somewhat” smooth. The constant struggle of running a business and being a single mom has definitely been tough. Trying to keep my business ahead of the game in terms of what is offered around the area has been fun but a little rocky at times. I never want my clients leaving my studio feeling like they need to do more or should have gotten more from their workout so I am always trying to incorporate new things, new equipment, and new moves into every format of class we offer
Please tell us about Barre Central.
Barre Central formerly Barre in the Park started primarily as a Barre Fitness studio and has grown significantly in regards to class formats. We offer Barre Fitness, Cardio Barre, Barre and Bounce, Bounce Circuits (both trampoline fitness format) and our newest format is ToneRX which is a TRX based class for strength and mobility and Personal Training. Barre Central is known for its “grit” style attitude and being “the most difficult barre class” that people have done. I always offer modifications and do not have levels for the classes. I want to be sure that the highest fitness level and the lowest can thrive in all of our classes. I think what sets us apart from other studios are our options in formats and style of class, the community of people that attend class and although we are a fitness studio and not technically a gym we absolutely have a certain “grit” about us.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
As of now and coming up on our fourth anniversary, I would not change a thing. I learn daily from the people around me and learn from little mistakes I have made in the past four years and could not be more thankful for the growth this business has had or the extremely loyal community that has been built.
