Meet Megan Janicek and Sarah Kelly of Sew Playful Creations in Lakewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Janicek and Sarah Kelly.

Megan and Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We decided to start Sew Playful Creations, LLC, in October of 2019. We are a sister owned and operated business of handmade goods in Lakewood, CO. We both have had a passion for sewing and creating one of a kind items our entire lives and with the birth of Megan’s first child, we started making more Mommy and Me Matching sets and accessories. After receiving several inquiries about our items, we decided that it would be a great opportunity to follow our creative passion and launch our business. Both Sarah and Megan worked full time in the Financial Planning Arena until Sarah decided to pursue her passion for working with children. Megan continues to manage a Financial Planning Practice full time and Sarah spends her days nannying her nephew and managing the day to day operations and customer service of Sew Playful Creations, LLC. We feel so blessed to be able to work through this journey together as best friends, sisters and business partners. We are currently marketing and selling our items online, at craft fairs and in a boutique setting.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting this business has been a journey filled with a lot of hard work, laughter, tears and exhaustion. Finding time while working full time and raising a family does not always make it easy to create these handmade and handsewn items. Working hours often start after our families go to bed and/or before the sun rises. Megan is also expecting their second child in August and has confirmed that the pregnancy brain is a real thing. This side effect of pregnancy has created a lot of extra laughs in the sewing room.

The current Pandemic has pushed Sew Playful Creations, LLC, into overtime as we work to create fabric face masks for purchase and to donate to medical professionals, essential employees and military. We feel very blessed to have the ability to utilize our skills to help in any way we can during these uncertain and trying times. We look forward to continuing to contribute where we can!

Sew Playful Creations – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for our quality handmade and handsewn items. We use quality fabrics, many of which are custom limited quantity fabric prints that are created and produced by other small business designers around the United States. We have a wide variety of handsewn items for women, men, children and fur babies. Our clothing product line currently consists of Mommy and Me Matching leggings/harem pants, Mommy and Me Matching Shirt, vinyl decal T-shirts and baby onesies, and slouchy beanies.

Our accessory line currently consists of Mommy and Me Matching Headbands, children’s bows, secret pocket infinity scarves, scrub hats, fabric face masks with filter pockets, scrunchies, key fob chapstick holders, natural cherry heating/cooling pads and fur baby bandanas. Our home decor items include children’s decorative nightlight lanterns and decorative holiday lanterns. Our upcoming product lines include cross body bags, purses/totes, children’s rompers, lanyards and hand sanitizer holders.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We personally define success as creating a desired and quality product while still finding joy in the creative process. We strive to continue to find joy, laughter, and love that is shown in our products while still maintaining an involved and active personal life with our families.
