Meet Meghan Dicklin of Nesting Your Business in Lafayette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Dicklin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Meghan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Four years ago, I was leading the business side of a successful ad tech division. If my goal was to climb the corporate ladder, I was exactly where I needed to be. But I had other goals. I always knew I wanted to run my own business before we had kids. I saw a required trade-off between corporate success and time with my kids and I knew I didn’t want to make that choice.

I started freelancing as a COO-for-hire with successful consultants and was introduced to the online business world. Over the next two years, I worked with many online business owners who found themselves with a lot of clients but lacked the business foundation, team management, and operational strategy to sustain.

During this time, we got pregnant with our son and experienced, first hand, the struggles in trying to plan a paid maternity leave as a solo-preneur and return to work with a baby at home. There was little out there to address these needs so I niched my services to focus on parent entrepreneurs.

I’ve also recently started working with companies that are committed to supporting their parent employees. The choice I faced four years ago is thankfully no longer as black-and-white. Nesting Your Business is an advocate for the working parent in all kinds of work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road. I can’t say I’ve met any business owner who’s journey was completely smooth! The biggest struggle I encountered was finding the right product to support my ideal client – that elusive product-market fit! I knew parent entrepreneurs were struggling. I knew I could help them, but it took some time to find the best way to serve. With my business operations background, I saw so many areas of business that could improve to make a parent’s life easier. I initially offered packages that were meant to overhaul an entire business. I learned along the way that this was too overwhelming for parents in this stage of life and business. Through trial and error and market research (a lot of conversations!) I’ve honed into a few sweet spots.

The biggest struggle I’ve seen is that parents are so overwhelmed that many are caught in a catch-22. Our work together would calm the overwhelm, but when they’re in the thick of everything it’s hard to consider adding one more thing to their plate.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Nesting Your Business story. Tell us more about the business.
Nesting Your Business is a consulting firm working with parent entrepreneurs and companies committed to supporting their parent employees.

I work with entrepreneurs from a business strategy and mindset perspective to ease their business into parenthood. This could be setting up their parental leave, building consistent income streams, designing work from home strategies, looking at product market/founder fit, team onboarding/management, and overall business operations.

On the company front, I partner with organizations to design parental leave, remote work, and reboarding programs.

I specialize in a very humanistic approach to these business challenges. I believe our work lives and family lives are naturally intertwined and there are many creative solutions to making it all work together for you. We don’t have to do things the way they’ve always been done. You can have a thriving career and be the parent you want to be without losing your mind. I’m most proud of supporting my clients on this unique journey.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Ah, luck! I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity (that helping hand from the universe!). I see my luck in meeting all the incredible people in my life. I feel so lucky to have met my husband at a dinner during a snowstorm (a night I almost didn’t go out because of the weather). I feel so lucky that I get to be Mom to our incredible son. And I feel so lucky for all of the people I’ve crossed paths within a business: colleagues, clients, business friends. Life is absolutely better with the right people in it, and I’m incredibly lucky to have great people in my life.
