Meet Melissa Healy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Healy.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before I became a board-certified health and wellness coach and trainer, I was a debilitatingly shy teenager that began teaching aerobics in highschool; landed an opportunity to travel the world as an aerobics instructor on cruise ships; returned to school to become a chiropractor, and through a series of unexpected events ended up in a 17-year career as a pharmaceutical sales rep. It was through this unique combination of experiences that I learned the power of effective communication as it relates to your health and well-being.

In 2016, I left pharmaceuticals to become a health and wellness coach/trainer. I took all that I learned those years in various facets of the health and wellness industry and created a coaching program that delivers a process using effective communication skills in elevating your health and well-being from the inside out. Here’s what I know today, first, how you communicate with yourself is in direct correlation to how you communicate with others. Next, how you communicate with others in setting boundaries, navigating conflict, and asking for what you need has a direct impact on your physical, physiological, mental and emotional health; and lastly, it takes just a few simple shifts and a little practice in how you communicate to significantly improve your well-being for the better.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For a young age I struggled with a lack of confidence and self-esteem that was so evident in the way I communicated with people that a close friend once told me I was, “the most negative person” she had ever met. In the midst of a successful pharmaceutical career, my inability to have tough conversations left me feeling unappreciated, disillusioned and unmotivated. It resulted in an ongoing display of passive-aggressive behavior that almost got me fired; chronic insomnia, and other health issues.

It was from this experience that I realized my inability to communicate in an assertive and confident manner was affecting my well-being personally and professionally. As I began conducting workshops and seminars around the country, I began to notice this was a common theme among the participants. My biggest obstacle is creating an awareness of the power of communicating, with both self and others, as healthy a habit as mindfulness, exercise, and diet when combating the signs and symptoms of burnout in an effective manner.

Please tell us more about your work.
Melissa Healy Coaching provides a process for high performing professionals, experiencing the overwhelm, fatigue and loss of motivation, brought on by burnout, to uncover the internal root cause of their symptoms, shift their perspective and align their behavior to desired outcomes. This process includes learning communication strategies in navigating conflict, setting appropriate boundaries, and building positive relationships while creating healthy habits so that they feel more productive, energized, and respected. Ultimately the program creates a sense of control and accountability that positively affecting every aspect of their health and well-being.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is Thanksgiving every year with all my aunts, uncles and cousins getting together for a family fun fest!!
