Today we’d like to introduce you to Micaela DeLisa.
Micaela, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started because I got sick of working in the office setting. I decided to go to school for skin care after freelancing for a skin company and realized how much I loved the skincare industry. After finishing school in aesthetics, I moved to Los Angeles, CA. I worked in skincare there for a few years, freelancing all over CA. I was offered to work at a salon in CO and moved back. I made some of the best connections at the salon. I was offered the opportunity to start doing lashes there. I was actually terrified to do lashes but figured the more I know, the better. I quickly grew to love them. The job of seeing it all come together, in the end, is one of the best feelings.
The next best feeling is seeing the joy on your client’s face when you hand them the mirror. This job may seem all about looks but in the end, it’s about making people feel good. I’m so happy to be able to be apart of that. After a few years of doing skincare and lashes, I decided to make the leap and focus solely on lashes. I moved over the AW Lashes and began the journey. I’ve truly met some of the best people in this job. I enjoy every single one of my clients. Seeing them every two to three weeks, they easily become a friend. We are usually laughing through the entire appointment. I can genuinely say the move into this industry was the best decision I ever made, and wouldn’t change it for the world.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t always easy. My start at the salon in Denver was slow, starting a business with zero clientele takes time. So I worked freelancing on the days that I wasn’t at the salon. I didn’t have any days off. Id say after two years I started seeing a significant change. Moving over to just doing lashes had different challenges, I’ve never been great at just sitting in one place all day, so not moving a lot throughout the day is probably the hardest. When you run your own business, it’s hard to sometimes say no, so I find myself working long hours but I honestly love what I do so it doesn’t feel like work.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is just focusing on working around the eyes. I do Lash extensions, specializing in classic, hybrid, volume and mega volume. I also do brow waxing, tinting and henna brows. I’d say the most requested set I do is a volume set. What I’m most proud of is that I started this business with no clients and now I’m fully supporting myself with this one job. I never gave up even when it was hard. And that I can say I enjoy everyday of work.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was definitely the social butterfly, I remember always wanting to help others if I saw they needed it, I was very active in dance and was there five nights a week. On weekends I was usually riding my bike around the neighborhood with all my girlfriends.
