Meet Micah (Brooklyn Blunt) Hollenbeck of Wandering Woodz Illustrations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Micah Hollenbeck.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Micah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was raised in Denver and attended college in Seward, Nebraska studying Graphic Design and Illustration. I moved back to Denver after finishing school and I have worked in many different fields since then. Mainly working in the graphic design industry for the past four years, I have since moved on to creating my own art. Aside from illustration, I also have a passion for the art of drag and am working on bringing drag to the art scene more and more.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Art has always been a passion of mine, and yes, the road wasn’t easy, and it’s still not easy. Most jobs I have worked had nothing to do with art, and I have struggled with creating in my free time and eventually I got to the point where I wasn’t doing art at all. But through the support of friends and hard work, I have been able to start creating again, and I haven’t stopped since.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Wandering Woodz Illustrations story. Tell us more about you art.
I’m an illustrator who works full time doing art, I do commission work and am currently working on a new webtoon. I specialize in chalk pastels, colored pencils, and digital platforms. I tend to use traditional illustration and digital art in tandem, blending and fixing what I can’t traditionally. My main work is surreal and fantasy style, which is present in my drag as well. My work also has clear queer themes, and often strong female or queer characters as focus.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been blessed with a wonderful and supportive group of friends, who are also all artists. Each one a professional in their own medium and very knowledgable. Being around other artists and communicating with them, sharing ideas, it’s all very inspiring. From bouncing ideas off of each other to producing work together, we all work as a giant art family that supports creation of art and the support of artists. That’s been the luckiest thing for me.
