Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Agnew.
Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I got my start into playing games like most people, when I was a child. I was usually the one to suggest a board game.
When I moved to Colorado, I met my best friend KC. He introduced me to the Lord of the Rings and Magic the Gathering and I was instantly hooked. We played every game that came out. Card games, miniatures games, board games, and role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons.
When I turned 16, I left school. It was probably the worst decision I’ve made in my life. But with nothing to fill my days, I quickly decided that I would need to find a job. My first choice was the local comic and games store of course because of my love and expertise in the field. As luck would have it, the previous game manager of 15 years had been fired the same day I went in to apply. They did a short interview and hired me on the spot. I was to start the next day.
I worked at Colorado Coins, Cards, and Comics for the next 12 years constantly growing and improving the game side of the store. I took over as manager and all ordering responsibilities. The only thing we never offered for games was a space to play them. For this reason, I would often make the drive down to Littleton to play at my favorite tournament store Black Gold. I became friends with the owner and his two sons who all played magic with me.
After ten years together my wife and I divorced. While seeking a change in my life I decided I’d like to try and open my own game store. Since I knew the owner of Black Gold so well, I decided to ask for his advise. Through our talks, it came up that he was willing to sell his existing business and I jumped at the opportunity.
I’m now married again and my new wife Shannan runs the store with me. We’re a perfect team. We’re five years into owning Black Gold and have expanded the selection of games we sell and offer events for as well as expanding the actual square footage of the store. This year, we have decided to change the name to something that is ours instead of continuing to use the name the old owner chose. So this summer, we will now be called Mythic Games.
The future is bright for mythic games as we have plans to run even more events this year and have an excellent and ever growing community of friendly gamers. Come check us out some time.
Has it been a smooth road?
Sure, there have been bumps. I was just barely dating Shannan, my wife when I bought the store. She didn’t know how involved she wanted to be and it was difficult to pay for the business and pay the bills. I didn’t pay myself a wage for the first nine months. We also had some issues with the city during our expansion as we’re in unincorporated Littleton and the city wouldn’t work with us on permits. But for the most part, it’s been fairly smooth.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We offer the largest selection of Board Games, Card games, and role-playing games in the state. We provide a play space to enjoy those games with others in the community. And we buy, sell, and trade in cards for collectible card games. Our store is large, well lit, and clean and we offer great customer service. But really our selection is what sets us apart from the other stores in the state. Our goal, however, unrealistic is it, is to have every game.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Oh yeah, we love Littleton and will most likely move here someday. I would definitely recommend Littleton to anyone looking to move out start a business.

This is a great store! They have a large number of tables and chairs, soda and munchies to buy (or you can bring in a meal) and a huge selection of games. I have a couple of games I bought there that I wanted and simply couldn’t find anywhere else, including Amazon, but I have also bought several there that were widely available other places. Mike’s prices are very fair and competitive. One thing he didn’t mention is that he also has a big selection of open board games that are free to play. You can come in and play some for free–if you find something you like, the odds are you can find it on his shelves, buy it and take it right home with you.
