Meet Michael Swanson of A-Wing Visuals in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Swanson.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been making videos since I was 14 years old and along the way, I began dreaming that I could create content for a living. In college, I studied mass communication with an emphasis in broadcasting. In my 4th year, I started getting scholarships for promotional content I had created on a study abroad program so that just helped fuel my desire to begin a career in this field.

Have I mentioned that during my time in Europe, I lived in the Harry Potter castle? Anyway, the weekend I graduated, I packed up a U-Haul and made my way to Denver. When I came to Denver as a lone-wolf videographer, I hit the internet hard, creating profiles on apps like Next Door, just to get my name out there. I did some work for free or almost free. Some people took advantage of me, stringing me along to tell me they had a friend who had a friend that needed work done, but never came to fruition.

But there were great opportunities, too. For example, one of my college roommates who also moved out to Denver right after graduating to start a food-truck catering business called Mountain Crust Pizza. They asked me to create promotional content to help get the word out. People absolutely loved the video, and it was one of the first professional pieces I could add to my portfolio. It’s also one that showed my style and landed me some other opportunities. I was hired by Soccer Sidekick, the Denver Start-Up Week Winner, as a part-time videographer to create a series of training videos. I loved that gig–it combined two of my passions–soccer and videography, and it helped me start to build a real base to show my clients. And, by the way, both of these businesses are now thriving so it’s really rewarding to know I played a small part in their success.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
From the time I arrived in Denver, I was lucky to make some fantastic contacts with local business leaders who helped shape my business. Coach Santi, one of my first clients and founder of Futsolo, provided me the break I needed to start producing my first professional videos. Moe, president of Royal Bookkeeping, provided solid advice on how to manage my finances, which can be very hard when you want everything all at once. Chris, owner of Acoustic Graphics, still shares his expertise in video production and is someone I can always brainstorm with and discuss the latest technology and market trends. I’m fortunate to have a strong support system with my business colleagues in LeTip and, of course, my family and friends.
