Meet Michael Tellez and Mireya Varela of Dreamersday Productions in Aurora

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Tellez and Mireya Varela.

Michael and Mireya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Dreamersday Productions started in 2017 when Mireya and myself traveled to California and purchased our first camera the Panasonic Lumix G7. Michael had asked his mom if he can use the credit card that she was going to toss away that came in the mail and insisted that he would use the camera to pay off the credit card. When we came back to New Mexico we started to get to work by creating short skits and practicing around the city. We decided to go to the New Mexico State Fair and I wanted to get some photos of Mireya while we were there to practice. As Mireya was standing in frame I really liked what I saw and decided to start filming instead. I wanted to get a shot that was hard to capture so we decided to get on one of the rides and capture our expressions.

After the video was edited and uploaded to YouTube that’s when we started to see a lot of views build up. When the video passed 10,000 views that’s when I got an email from an agency asking about our video we uploaded and that they wanted to buy our footage. I was skeptical at first and texted Mireya not knowing what to really do. We decided to take the chance and we responded back to the agency. Turns out the Director of the agency had been trying to get a hold of us for a few weeks through emailing and Facebook, he was persistent. He offered to buy three seconds of a specific clip where Mireya’s facial expression is shown for a Samsung commercial that was to be aired on the internet for 1 year and television for six months. I was completely blown away by the value of such a short clip.

We were sent two contracts, one for the offering of the video at $8000.00 and one for Mireya’s permission to use her image. We agreed, signed and I had the camera paid off right away, you can say that was a hefty risk we took. After paying off the camera, I gave some to my parents, upgraded on equipment and we planned to move out of state. When Mireya finished college we planned to move to Denver, Colorado but before we left we first reached out to the local music scene in Denver to make our presence known.

Once we arrived, our first music video we had done was with Rachel Bailey and Keenan Trevon for their song together, Communicate. After that project, we built a strong relationship with them both and continued to create consistently. Throughout the year other artists saw our quality and reached out to us for work because of our unique style with cinematography. To this day we have worked with well-known artists In Denver such as Rachel Bailey, Keenan TreVon, DNA Picasso, Kayla Rae, Code RED, Danae Simone, Nathan Palmer(Napalm), TheyCallHimAP, etc.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road at all. We personally feel however that owning a business isn’t supposed to have a smooth journey. We learn with the up’s and down’s because that’s the only way we will find success, is to fail. Some of the struggles that we have dealt with are working with the correct people, in this industry, the value is quite overlooked which leaves many videographers to undersell their value to get by.
