Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Jackson.
Michelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My name is Michelle Jackson and I grew up in Boulder and Denver. In fact, I’ve moved back and forth between the two cities for years and now have settled in Denver for the long-term. Currently, I run two very different projects. The first is a personal finance focused website and podcast called “Michelle is Money Hungry.” The goal with that project is to empower, encourage, and inspire my audience to design their best lives through better finances. I became involved in the personal finance space after having a ton of terrible experiences with money. Those experiences were a messy combination of bad financial habits, unexpected outside situations that affected my money, and lack of financial knowledge.
As I worked through the project of cleaning up my finances, I decided to share my story with the hope that it would help other people experiencing the same situation that I found myself in. At this moment in time, I’ve paid off over $60,000 in debt and am now an online entrepreneur. It has been a challenging experience to work through but I’m so glad that I worked on my finances and shared my story.
My second project that I’m focused on is called “Square State.” It’s a website and podcast focused on uplifting all Colorado voices, supporting Colorado local businesses/products/and initiatives, and normalizing seeing black and brown faces in outdoor spaces. I love this project because I get a chance to have conversations with Coloradans from all walks of life. I created this project because I wanted to share Colorado from a Coloradan’s perspective and I felt that there was a real lack of content being created about the state.
Has it been a smooth road?
Working for yourself is so challenging especially as a digital entrepreneur because there are so many “squirrel” moments that you have to work through. There are so many ways that you can serve your audience and make money that the process can feel very overwhelming. There’s a lot more experimentation in a digital business model than would have anticipated.
Square State and Michelle is Money Hungry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I think what makes Square State unique is that I’m having conversations with a number of Coloradans who are still in the early growth phase of their business. I find those stories so intriguing and interesting. My goal with Square State is to make is ridiculously easy for state residents/tourists/and long-term visitors to support Colorado goods/products/and services. To put it simply, Square State is a love story to the state of Colorado. Square State can be found at: https://squarestateco.com
With Michelle is Money Hungry, I do the following: I create free content, host in person events such as my “Money on the Mountain Financial Retreat” that I held at The Source Hotel. I also self-publish both fiction and non-fiction books and work with future authors via my “Make Money with eBooks Academy” https://michelleismoneyhungry.com/academy
My goal is to help online entrepreneurs identify how they can be of service to their audience and how they can create passive income at the same time. It’s like working on a puzzle that never ends.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I absolutely love the people of Denver and the feeling that anything is possible here. Whenever I mention a creative idea or initiative that I would like to undertake, people are so enthusiastic about it. And, I’ve observed that same level of enthusiasm whenever other people share their ideas too. As for what I dislike about Denver I would say it’s a very American issue-people are clearly being left behind and not experiencing the opportunities that I’ve had and I’m very aware and worried about this. We can, and should, do better by our citizens.
