Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nault.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I became a real estate agent because I learned the hard way that every home buyer and seller needs an advocate with their best interests at heart. When I was in my early twenties raising two young children, my then-husband and I decided to buy our first home together. We were so excited to be homeowners that we went with the first real estate agent and mortgage broker we came across. That turned out to be a huge mistake. They made no attempt to educate us about the process, and at the closing table, we were horrified to learn that they had changed all of our figures and raised our interest rate. The payment was more than we could afford, but we didn’t think we had a choice at that point. We thought we had to sign.
Nobody told us, “You don’t have to do this.” Nobody gave us the advice we really needed at that moment. Nobody stepped up to advocate on our behalf. So we lost everything. That’s when I decided to learn everything I could about real estate. I never wanted to be in that position again, on any level. And I also wanted to make sure that nobody else would be, either. Not on my watch.
Three years later, the relationship ended and suddenly I was a single mother. I knew I needed to build a better life for me and my kids, and real estate was a great option because A. there was no cap on the amount of income I could make if I was willing to put in the work, and B. I could make my own schedule. As a young single mom with an entrepreneurial spirit and no college degree, that was really appealing to me.
My studies only took me so far, though. Real estate is one of those things that you have to learn by doing, and which requires you to rely pretty heavily on intuition. Two decades later, I’m a sought-after and respected realtor in the Greater Denver Area. Because I go to the mat for my clients. Every. Single. Time.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has NOT been smooth. It takes money to make money, and it takes time to build up the right kind of clientele. In the early days, I had to work a whole lot of part-time jobs just to stay afloat. Waiting tables, property turn-overs, office temp work — you name it, I did it.
Juggling a minimum of two jobs at any given time as a single mom was no easy feat. The scheduling alone forced me to become incredibly well-organized and efficient. I had no time to waste, so I learned how to work smarter as well as harder.
Meanwhile, real estate was and still is male-dominated, so at first, it was a real challenge to be taken seriously and prove my worth as an agent. I remember once when I was showing a home in knee-deep snow, I had a broker tell me it was inappropriate for me to be there in boots and jeans, that I should always be in high heels and a skirt during showings. Talk about a ridiculous double standard!
I’m finally at the point where I can do things my way, and I know my clients are better for it. My greatest assets are my intuition, empathy, experience, and ingenuity. NOT my legs.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I specialize in advocacy. I work hard to make sure my clients are always educated about the process and have all the information they need to make the best decision for them and their families. Call it my Mama Bear/Lioness instinct, but I instinctually treat my clients like family, and I fight for them like family.
I’m also really drawn to challenges. I like taking on clients with tricky problems to solve. What really sets me apart, though, is my intuition. I’ve learned to trust my instincts and work with my intuition around reading people and reading homes to figure out exactly what’s needed. It never leads me wrong!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I wouldn’t say I have one particular proud moment, my life is full of them. However, if I could pick one thing that I am most proud of, it would be the person I have become because of all of my struggles and victories in my career.
