Meet Mina Stevens of Morbid Creations AKA Morbidly Mina in North Denver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mina Stevens.

Mina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started this adventure 13 years ago! I got a camera to take pictures of my children. I started getting creative and exploring with different edits. After that, I asked friends to model for me and sorta just grew from there. I wanted to do a themed shoot and looked at big flowy dresses for shoots and realized fast that I could not afford them! So if I can’t buy it…I will make it and I did. After that, it all spiraled into these amazing and fun shoots. I love darker more macabre style so I started making costumes for these styled, darker shoots.

I have models of all ages in my creeptastic sets! I absolutely love shooting young kids in my darker shoots, we have lots of fun! I do some SFX makeup myself or love collaborating with makeup artists and even other photographers. Because someone saw my potential with these costumes I made, I was asked to show them in a fashion show! Now I sorta just do it all. I draw, design, photography and create themed sets. I love doing this as it pushes my creativity to new heights and pushes me mentally. My mind works 24/7. If I have a dream and it’s funky or weird, I will wake up and write it down. I always have a notebook with me at all times and a drawing pad. You never know when the creative vibes kick in.

Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think there is a such thing as a smooth road. You have to make mistakes to learn from them. I have my fair share of haters as my work is usually more off the wall, macabre style. I love using blood and glitter the most, my two favorite accessories lol. Even with my kiddos and that has rubbed people the wrong way but I promise you…..NO CHILDREN ARE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF MY SHOOTS! lol, plus I put some shoots out there that don’t always rep me the best so it’s always about trying something and finding what works best for me. Learning curves are rough for a reason! take the L and learn from it so you know what not to do the next time!

Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
I started Morbid Creations as a general business making creepy nicknacks and shoots. Now I think I am known for my creepy shoots and designs. I get asked to show my designs a lot which is awesome! I never thought that is where I would have headed. When I first started I had no clue how to sew at all! I just saw something in my mind and I created it in my own way.

I’m proud of everything I have accomplished with my brand. Not many photographers specialize is macabre shoots and designs in Denver and sets me apart from others and I love that. I love being different and challenging myself artistically. I am the definition of an artist. I create and sculpt things to fit what my mind wants. As long as I accomplish my vision, then I am pretty happy.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Thornton because I grew up here and it’s home. It’s my comfort zone. With my art, I’m forced to travel around but that is good because it pushes me to get out. I am a loner really and enjoy my space so it forces me to be social and meet new faces and make new contacts. That is important.

What I dislike about my city is the cost of living! Money is the root of all evil and we all need money to survive so it’s a no-win situation.

Pricing:

  • $250 for a themed shoot (images are separate)
