Meet Miranda Kerr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Kerr.

Hi Miranda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Hi, I’m Miranda, owner of Fern Floral Design Studio based in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. I’ve been focusing on event floral design for six years now. I’ve always been creative; I studied Interior Design at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with a concentration in sustainability. As a florist, my work has been heavily influenced by my background in the arts. When my husband and I moved to Colorado this past summer, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to start my own company. With Fern, I have the freedom to explore a fine art approach and take on more creative work. I also have the freedom to realize my own ethical, sustainable practices. Some day, we hope to start our own flower farm, to be invested in the process from stem to centerpiece. For now though, I have been fortunate that so many people here in Colorado appreciate the creativity and sustainability that Fern brings to the table. I’m looking forward to this coming wedding season and can’t wait to share the designs we have planned!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been earning the respect of my peers. The floral industry is dominated by a lot of ‘old-timers’. Especially in retail flower shops, there’s an expectation that things should be done the way they have always been done. I’ve always been the ‘youngest designer in the room’, so to speak, and my inclination to push the creative envelope wasn’t always received well. Fortunately, this industry is changing, new design styles are coming into favor in lieu of traditional, more formal styles. With weddings and events these days, people want to stand out, express their individuality and have fun doing it. As a part of the generation that is getting married right now, I find myself in a unique position to understand my clients’ visions, because I share their values and desires to explore designs that are a bit more out of the box.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Fern Floral Design Studio, we specialize in bespoke weddings. I believe each design we create should speak to the couple, their vision, the venue, and the season. No two couples are the same, so no two weddings should be the same. A sense of time and place is something I aim to capture in all of my designs by incorporating local, seasonal flowers that will blend naturally with the environment. We take the time to carefully curate a detailed proposal for each event and are proud of our ability to translate this idea, from initial vision to an experience. An experience that captures a place, a shared love, a moment in time they will never forget.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is of exploring the Boston Flower and Garden Show. Every year my mom would take me into the city to explore this huge exhibit; a giant warehouse filled with different miniature gardens and landscapes. Each one its own little world; waterfalls and ponds, bridges and paths you could walk through, all covered in beautiful blooming plants. There was a whole floral arrangement section with the most avant-garde, modern arrangements you could imagine. And in the back, aisles, and aisle of vendors selling all kinds of garden accessories and also rare plants. I specifically remember the bonsai’s, adorable miniature trees that had been carefully pruned for years. This yearly excursion really opened my eyes to the world, and industry, of plants and flowers.
