Meet Mr. Mars

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mr. Mars.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well long story short, I have always loved art (who doesn’t say that) and airbrushing but I stumbled into creating Designer Toys years ago when I was a nanny, and I was always known for bringing the children artwork or something to create with. One day I found a blank toy called a “Bunny” by Kidrobot that you mark up yourself and bought one to create with my buddy Cody who I was taking care of at the time. Let’s just say I enjoyed them more than he did. haha

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha oh no, it never is. I mean some things end up better than you’d expect but I like to stay the path and be open to things not usually working out how you’d like. I’ve had struggles with everything from capitol, to time management, artists block, you name it! But mainly the struggle was finding my niche in the art world and how I could be of some use and create at the same time. Teaching myself to airbrush and finding my first creative gig 9-5 was the hardest part, once that was obtained, it became a lot easier to follow my path.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I go by “Mr. Mars” for the artwork and I customize and create Designer Toys. This can be range from sculpting, airbrushing, casting, molding, painting, you name it, on hand made artisan crafted toys. I created what I call the “BOMBERS” and “BURNERS” which are my specialty of melted toys mixing with bright immense color palettes, all usually dealing with spray paint. Bursting out of a recycled spray can, having a spray can explode on them, etc.

My passion for graffiti and letters has always gripped me, but when I realized I can UP-CYCLE, or reuse and object usually being thrown away and turn it into pieces of art, I think I found a calling. haha. More recently I have also been up-cycling the toys, or reworking broken toys as well, saving them from dumpsters, yard sales, and thrift shops. It gives me a chance to work on themes that I love, while creating something cool to look at and collect, at the same time bringing people back to their memories of childhood or pop culture.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I want this. More than I want sleep. I don’t even know what “this” is, but I LOVE creating. So much I have to do this for a living now. It’s been almost two years full time and seeing how my art affects people of all ages, genders, and usually gets such a positive response, it’s a no brainer to me that art is my calling. Mix that need with love, and positivity, and staying humble and I truly think anyone can do what they want. There are some times where your gotta grind harder than others and things may not go the way you expected like I said before but having self-confidence and faith is key. I truly would keep doing this if no one paid me to.
