Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Knudson, CHC, BS, CEOC, AADP.
Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up on a farm in South Dakota. Being the 12th of 16 (yes 16) children made for a full and rich upbringing. Family is a huge part of my story. Childhood memories take me back to all the crazy things that farm kids do. If you grew up on a farm or know someone who did then you know what I mean.
Despite the fact that I love to cook and never ate fast food, my health was always a struggle. Even as a kid I remember not feeling well most of the time. Our mother had passed away at age 47 from heart disease. Our father had been diagnosed with MS at age 35, cancer at age 50 and passed away at age 67. This is not a great family health history!
I graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1991 with a degree in business administration. After moving to Colorado I soon married the love of my life, Jason, whom I met in college. After a short career working in sales, I was blessed to be able to stay at home with my three beautiful girls for over 20 years.
Ten years ago I was experiencing major digestive issues, chronic infections, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, depression, and MS-like symptoms. Our children were also having many health issues. Thankfully we found a holistic doctor who helped us identify food sensitivities and overcome our health challenges by using food as medicine. I am now thrilled to be helping people on their journey to optimal health. My training in functional and integrative nutrition gives me the tools needed to help us be successful together.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say it has been a slow, steady journey that has required hard work and perseverance for sure. I am thankful I did not have to rely on the income (since I had been a stay at home mom). This takes a lot of pressure off. I do what I do because I love what I do. That it is what has kept me going! More and more people are beginning to figure out that nutrition and lifestyle matter so that makes my job easier as well. Eight years ago when I started my practice that was not so much the case.
Tell us more about your practice.
I am a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach, Certified Essential Oil Coach and Nutrition Specialist. I started New Day Whole Health about eight years ago after overcoming my health struggles. I offer one-on-one consulting to help people get to the root causes that keep them from having optimal health. In Functional Medicine, we are taught to ask lots of questions…What are the current medical symptoms? Family health history? Nutrition quality? Toxin exposure? Life stressors? Emotional factors? There are so many pieces that go into our health. It is a very holistic approach. I educate both through the one on one consulting and through group classes to inspire and empower my clients.
I believe many things set me apart as a Health Coach. One of them being the length of time I have been at this! Many new health coaches are coming onto the scene currently, but I have spent many years seeking natural solutions for my health personally and have gained a lot of knowledge about herbs, essential oils and food as medicine. I can look at the root causes and suggest natural solutions for people. Another main factor that makes me successful is my compassion for people. Losing my mother at age 10 brought on a lot of emotional pain, and the health issues I experienced caused a lot of physical pain. I feel deeply for people in their struggles and can meet them where they are.
I also have my line of handcrafted topical use essential oil blends for specific health concerns that I use in my practice. I use many of the expensive and uncommon oils that most people would not typically have and incorporate them into my blends. Essential oils have been used as medicine for thousands of years by traditional cultures and have been a huge part of my healing journey. They are very affordable, natural solutions to promote good health, often so much better than medications or even natural oral supplements. You can check out my handcrafted blends at NewDayWholeHealth.com.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes!! Kudos to my amazing husband, Jason, who has been my biggest encouragement. I would not be doing what I do without him. Also, thank you to my family and friends who have been so supportive, to Dr. Tom Svinarich whom I met at the Institute for Functional Medicine who was a great referral source and mentor for me in the early days of my practice, and to so many of the doctors at IFM for their amazing inspiration and teaching. Lastly, a huge shout out to TruBucha in Lone Tree for hosting our group classes!
