Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Zanecchia.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Natalie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My love for letterpress began in 2009, during the economic slump, when I was struggling to find a job that I was truly passionate about. As a graphic designer, I had a strong urge to get off the computer to create. I was living in New York City at the time and was searching for any class that might fuel the creativity and drive that I was lacking in my day-to-day work. I took my first letterpress workshop, then I took another one, and after that second workshop, I was impressed (pun, intended!).
I started renting time at studios in New York City and then Providence, Rhode Island. After a few years of personal projects, annual holiday gifts for friends and family, I decided to launch Pressed. It quickly evolved from a few projects to wedding invitation services, a line of greeting cards, lunar calendars, and more.
In 2015, I decided to relocate back to Denver, Colorado, my hometown. After a few presses, a few studios, and a few lessons learned along the way, I’m happily up and running on my dream letterpress machine! I’m now also hosting my own workshops to hopefully spark that same love for letterpress in future printmakers.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth — I don’t think it would be as exciting, rewarding, or invigorating if it was! One of the biggest challenges that I think any creative business faces is how to continue to stay passionate, driven, and true to themselves through the hard realities of actually running a business. It can be easy to fall into the weeds with bookkeeping, taxes, marketing, updating the website, uploading that Instagram story at the optimum moment, and then at the end of the day wondering who you really are and what you are even doing?
I’ve had a couple of those moments along my journey. However, the most recent moment was when I moved back to Colorado and for the first time since I launched Pressed, I did not have access to a press or a studio. It took some time for me to find my footing, I farmed a lot of my work out, and I started to struggle with what the business had become.
I had lost my dedication to printing, the whole reason I started this business. In order to keep the flame lit, I had to get back to getting my hands inky and feeding each piece of stationery through the antique letterpress.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the PressedCo story. Tell us more about the business.
Pressed is a custom design studio specializing in fine letterpress stationery and wedding invitation services. My ultimate goal is to design stationery that leaves an unforgettable impression.
I think what I’m most proud of is that I continue to strive to be a custom design shop. I am dedicated to bringing my client’s stories, whatever they may be, to life on paper. There is no better feeling then when you meet with a client, listen to their story, and create something unique, special, and beautiful together.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It’s hard for me to say—we’re so connected to our devices that I do worry that we’ll begin to lose touch with one another in a tactile way. However, I hope that there continues to be a growing trend for the nostalgic, for the handmade, and the heartfelt. I hope that the handwritten thank you note or birthday card will still create joy for those sentimental souls seeking for the right words to say.
